Tablets; mentioned by Isaiah (Isa. 3:2020The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings, (Isaiah 3:20)) among a woman’s ornaments, are still in use. They are little cylinders (like bodkin-cases) of wood or metal, attached to chains and used as charms in which women place little rolls of parchment on which their secret wishes are written. The R.V., however, renders the Hebrew word “perfume boxes.”

Talent; a weight of about 108 lb. avoirdupois, for gold, or 96 1/3 lb. silver. The light weight talent is one half of these numbers. See WEIGHTS.

(Ezekiel 8:14)).

Taralah, tăr′-ă-lăh, “reeling” (?); Josh. 18:2727And Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah, (Joshua 18:27).
Tares. Matt. 13:25-2725But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? (Matthew 13:25‑27). Gk. ζιζάνια; Bot. N. Lolium temulentum. R.V. marg. “darnel.” The Arabic zawân, the bearded darnel, which is found as a weed among corn crops in Britain. It is a grass almost undistinguishable from wheat while the two are in blade, but bears poisonous grains.
Taverns; shops, inns, from a word meaning “a table.” The Three Taverns was a town on the Appian Way 30 miles south of Rome, where a company of Christians from Rome met and welcomed Paul on his way to that city. Acts 28:1515And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage. (Acts 28:15).
Taxation; of all the world, under Cæsar Augustus (Luke 2:11And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (Luke 2:1)). The R.V. “enrollment” more nearly gives the sense of the Greek: this “enrollment” was a census of the whole Roman empire.

Tin was early known to the Hebrews, being one of the imports of Egypt from Spain. Later it was obtained from Britain. So Herodotus and Strabo. It was used for the preparation of bronze, its alloy with copper.

Tishri, tĭsh′-rī; called Ethanim in 1 Kings 8:22And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. (1 Kings 8:2). Title; Superscription; Over every crucified malefactor were inscribed, on a white tablet smeared with gypsum, his name, residence, and offence. This was the official warrant for his execution, and was copied from the register in which his sentence was recorded. What Pilate “had written” on the cross of Jesus (John 19:19-2219And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. 21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Tophet, tō′-phĕt; was the furnace in the Valley of the Sons of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, in which human sacrifices were offered (2 Kings 23:1010And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.
