Herod, hĕr′-o̲d.
(4) (Agrippa II.) Visit to Festus. Acts 25. Paul’s defence before. Acts 26.
Herodians, hĕ-rō′-dĭ-ăns; partisans of Herod. They appear to have been a political party rather than a religious sect. It is thought that they looked with disfavor on the popular Messianic expectations and desired a restoration of Jewish independence under some member of the Herodian family. In Matt. 22:1616And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. (Matthew 22:16) we find them allied with the Pharisees, to whose general principles they were hostile, in a combined attack upon our Lord. Rebuked by Christ. Matt. 22:1616And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. (Matthew 22:16); Mark 12:1313And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. (Mark 12:13).

Hinnom, hĭn′-no̲m; valley of (Neh. 11:3030Zanoah, Adullam, and in their villages, at Lachish, and the fields thereof, at Azekah, and in the villages thereof. And they dwelt from Beer-sheba unto the valley of Hinnom. (Nehemiah 11:30); Josh. 15:88And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward: (Joshua 15:8)). The Hebrew name is Gê-hinnôm, hence Gehenna (Matt. 5:2222But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. (Matthew 5:22), R.V., etc.). A valley south of Jerusalem. The scene of Molech worship, the place into which the Jews cast all manner of refuse and the bodies of animals and criminals. To prevent infection, great fires were kept always burning (the Gehenna of fire, R.V.), and the place became the type and symbol of the place of future punishment. 2 Kings 23:1010And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech. (2 Kings 23:10); 2 Chron. 28:3; 33:63Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. (2 Chronicles 28:3)
6And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. (2 Chronicles 33:6)
; Jer. 7:31; 19:11; 32:3531And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart. (Jeremiah 7:31)
11And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury. (Jeremiah 19:11)
35And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. Hornet; Heb. Tzir’ah; Gk. σφηκία; Zool. S. Vespa Crabro. Hornets were abundant in Palestine. In Ex. 23:2828And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. (Exodus 23:28), Deut. 7:2020Moreover the Lord thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed. (Deuteronomy 7:20), and Josh. 24:1212And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow. (Joshua 24:12), the hornet is mentioned as used by God to drive out the enemies of Israel. The author of the book of Wisdom took these places in a literal sense (Wisd. 12:8-10), and some modern authorities, in view of the extreme savageness of the Palestinian hornet, have followed him: but it is more probable that the passages are metaphorical.
Horns. (1) figuratively mentioned. 1 Sam. 2:11And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. (Daniel 7:7)
3Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. (Daniel 8:3)
; Hab. 3:44And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power. (Habakkuk 3:4); Rev. 5:6; 12:3; 13:1; 17:36And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. (Revelation 5:6)
3And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. (Revelation 12:3)
1And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. (Revelation 13:1)
3So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. (Revelation 17:3)
