Made for God. Prov. 16:4⁴The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. (Proverbs 16:4), with Rev. 4:11¹¹Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Revelation 4:11).

God's purpose in creation completed by making. Gen. 2:5⁵And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. (Genesis 2:5), with 7 v.

Cannot profit God. Job 22:2²Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? (Job 22:2). Psa. 16:2²O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; (Psalm 16:2).

Unworthy of God's favor. Job 1:17¹⁷While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. (Job 1:17). Psa. 8:4⁴What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (Psalm 8:4).

CREATED

By God. Gen. 1:27²⁷So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (Genesis 1:27). Isa. 45:12¹²I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. (Isaiah 45:12).

By Christ. John 1:3³All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:3). Col, 1:16.

By the Holy Ghost. Job 33:4⁴The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. (Job 33:4).

After consultation, by the Trinity. Gen. 1:26²⁶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:26).

On the sixth day. Gen. 1:31³¹And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31).

Upon the earth. Deut. 4:32³²For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? (Deuteronomy 4:32), Job 20:4⁴Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth, (Job 20:4).

From the dust. Gen. 2:7⁷And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7). Job 33:6⁶Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. (Job 33:6).

In the image of God. Gen. 1:26, 27²⁶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. ²⁷So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (Genesis 1:26‑27). 1 Cor. 11:7⁷For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. (1 Corinthians 11:7).

After the likeness of God. Gen. 1:26²⁶And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:26): James 3:9⁹Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. (James 3:9).

Male and female. Gen. 1:27²⁷So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (Genesis 1:27). Gen. 5:2²Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. (Genesis 5:2).

A living soul. Gen. 2:7⁷And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7). 1 Cor. 15:45⁴⁵And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. (1 Corinthians 15:45).

In uprightness. Ecc. 7:29.

In knowledge (inferred). Col. 3:10¹⁰And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: (Colossians 3:10).

Under obligations to obedience. Gen. 2:16,17¹⁶And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: ¹⁷But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (Genesis 2:16‑17).

A type of Christ. Rom. 5:14¹⁴Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. (Romans 5:14).

Approved of by God. Gen. 1:31³¹And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31).

Blessed by God. Gen. 1:28²⁸And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:28). Gen. 5:2²Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. (Genesis 5:2).

Placed in the garden of Eden. Gen. 2:15¹⁵And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15).

Every herb and tree given to, for food. Gen. 1:29²⁹And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. (Genesis 1:29).

Allowed to eat flesh after the flood. Gen. 9:3³Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. (Genesis 9:3).

Not good for, to be alone. Gen. 2:18¹⁸And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. (Genesis 2:18).

Woman formed to be a help for. POSSESSED OF

A body. Matt. 6:25²⁵Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? (Matthew 6:25).

A soul. Luke 12:20²⁰But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? (Luke 12:20). Acts 14:22²²Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. (Acts 14:22). 1 Peter 4:19¹⁹Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. (1 Peter 4:19).

A spirit. Prov. 18:14¹⁴The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14). Prov. 20:17¹⁷Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. (Proverbs 20:17). 1 Cor. 2:11¹¹For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (1 Corinthians 2:11).

Understanding. Eph. 1:18¹⁸The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, (Ephesians 1:18). Eph. 4:18¹⁸Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: (Ephesians 4:18).

Will. 1 Cor. 9:17¹⁷For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. (1 Corinthians 9:17). 2 Peter 1:21²¹For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:21).

Affections. 1 Chron. 29:3³Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, (1 Chronicles 29:3). Col. 3:2²Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:2).

Conscience. Rom. 2:15¹⁵Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) (Romans 2:15). 1 Tim. 4:2²Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; (1 Timothy 4:2).

Memory. Gen. 41:9⁹Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day: (Genesis 41:9). 1 Cor. 15:2²By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:2).

Made by God in his successive generations. Job 10:8-11⁸Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. ⁹Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? ¹⁰Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews. (Job 10:8‑11). Job 31:15¹⁵Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? (Job 31:15).

Fearfully and wonderfully made. Psa. 139:14¹⁴I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (Psalm 139:14).

Of every nation, made of one blood. Acts 17:26²⁶And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; (Acts 17:26).

Quickened by the breath of God. Gen. 2:7⁷And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7). Gen. 7:22²²All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. (Genesis 7:22). Job 33:4⁴The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. (Job 33:4).

Made wise by the inspiration of the Almighty. Job 32:8, 9⁸But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. ⁹Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. (Job 32:8‑9).

Inferior to angels. Psa. 8:5⁵For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. (Psalm 8:5), with Heb. 2:7⁷Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honor, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: (Hebrews 2:7).

Is of the earth earthy. 1 Cor. 15:47⁴⁷The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:47).

Nature and constitution of, different from other creatures. 1 Cor. 15:39³⁹All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. (1 Corinthians 15:39).

More valuable than other creatures. Matt. 6:26²⁶Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? (Matthew 6:26). Matt. 10:31³¹Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:31). Matt. 12:12¹²How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. (Matthew 12:12).

wiser than other creatures. Job 35:11¹¹Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? (Job 35:11).

Received dominion over other creatures. Gen. 1:28²⁸And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:28). Psa. 8:6-8⁶Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: ⁷All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; ⁸The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. (Psalm 8:6‑8).

Gave names to other creatures. Gen. 2:19, 20¹⁹And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. ²⁰And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. (Genesis 2:19‑20).

Intellect of, matured by age. 1 Cor. 13:11¹¹When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. (1 Corinthians 13:11).

CALLED

The potsherd of the earth. Isa. 45:9⁹Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? (Isaiah 45:9).

A worm. Job 25:6⁶How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm? (Job 25:6).

Vain man. Job 11:12¹²For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt. (Job 11:12). James 2:20²⁰But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? (James 2:20).

Flesh. Gen. 6:12¹²And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. (Genesis 6:12). Joel 2:28²⁸And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: (Joel 2:28).

COMPARED TO

Grass. Isa. 40:6-8⁶The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: ⁷The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. ⁸The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. (Isaiah 40:6‑8). 1 Peter 1:24²⁴For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: (1 Peter 1:24).

Clay in the potter's hands. Isa. 64:8⁸But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. (Isaiah 64:8). Jer. 18:2, 6²Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. (Jeremiah 18:2)
⁶O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. (Jeremiah 18:6).

Vanity. Psa. 144:4⁴Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away. (Psalm 144:4).

A sleep. Psa. 90:5⁵Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. (Psalm 90:5).

A wild ass's colt. Job 11:12¹²For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt. (Job 11:12).

Originally naked and not ashamed. Gen. 2:25²⁵And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:25).

Disobeyed God by eating part of the forbidden fruit. Gen. 3:1-12¹Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? ²And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: ³But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. ⁴And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: ⁵For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. ⁶And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. ⁷And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. ⁸And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. ⁹And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? ¹⁰And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. ¹¹And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Filled with shame after the fall. Gen. 3:10¹⁰And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. (Genesis 3:10).

Covered himself with fig-leaves. Gen. 3:7⁷And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. (Genesis 3:7).

Clothed by God with skins. Gen. 3:21²¹Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21).

Punished for disobedience. Gen. 3:16-19¹⁶Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. ¹⁷And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; ¹⁹In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Involved posterity in his ruin. Rom. 5:12-19¹²Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: ¹³(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. ¹⁴Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. ¹⁵But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. Born in sin. Psa. 51:5⁵Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. (Psalm 51:5).

Born to trouble. Job 5:7⁷Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. (Job 5:7).

Has an appointed time on the earth. Job 7:1¹Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? (Job 7:1).

Days of, compared to a shadow. 1 Chron. 29:15¹⁵For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. (1 Chronicles 29:15).

Days of, as the days of a hireling. Job 7:1¹Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? (Job 7:1).

Has but few days. Job 14:1¹Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. (Job 14:1).

Ordinary limit of his life. Psa. 90:10¹⁰The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. (Psalm 90:10).

Ignorant of what is good for him. Ecc. 6:12.

Cannot direct his ways. Jer. 10:23²³O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (Jeremiah 10:23). Prov. 20:24²⁴Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way? (Proverbs 20:24).

Walks in a vain show. Psa. 39:6⁶Surely every man walketh in a vain show: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. (Psalm 39:6).

GOD

Instructs. Psa. 94:10¹⁰He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know? (Psalm 94:10).

Orders the goings of. Prov. 5:21²¹For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings. (Proverbs 5:21). Prov. 20:24²⁴Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way? (Proverbs 20:24).

All the ways of, clean in his own eyes. Prov. 16:2²All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits. (Proverbs 16:2).

CHRIST

Cannot retain his spirit from death. Ecc. 8:8.

Would give all his possessions for the preservation of life. Job 2:4⁴And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. (Job 2:4).

Able to sustain bodily affliction. Prov. 18:14¹⁴The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14).

Sinks under trouble of mind. Prov. 18:14¹⁴The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14).

No trust to be placed in. Psa. 118:8⁸It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8). Isa. 2:22²²Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of? (Isaiah 2:22).
