There are two issues which occupy God’s attention right now, and they occupy His attention all of the time—sinners and sin. Please don’t confuse the issues.

You may think that God does not love you because of something you have done or experienced. But I am delighted to tell you that, because of what and who He is, He absolutely does love you. Consider these statements from His Word, the Bible:

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:16-17

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15

It both absolutely true and absolutely amazing that God truly loves sinners—even while He absolutely hates their sin.

Yes, God hates sin, but He chooses to make a distinction between the sin and the sinner. That is why He can be both a Savior and a Judge. He condemns sin, but He saves sinners.

Centuries before He sent Jesus to die and to be our Savior, God said this:

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. … Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon him while He is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 1:18 and Isaiah 55:6-9

Someone may say, “But what about my past, with all of its ugly consequences, and what about my compulsions and habits now? I don’t think I can make the break!”

God knows all about it. He knows more about it than you do, and He cares more about it than you do; and He is able and willing and waiting to handle it all. You are not able to save yourself in any way. He has to do it all; and, because God is God, He can do it all. The ultimate issue is this: Will you let Him prove it? Will you let Him save you?

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. Acts 16:31

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13

Remember this: God hates our sin as much as He loves us—and sin must be judged.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. 1 Peter 3:18

For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:18

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. John 8:36
