Forbidden. 2 Chr. 30:8⁸Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the Lord, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the Lord your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you. (2 Chronicles 30:8). Psa. 75:5⁵Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. (Psalm 75:5). Psa. 95:8⁸Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: (Psalm 95:8).

Pride. Neh. 9:16, 29¹⁶But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, (Nehemiah 9:16)
²⁹And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. (Nehemiah 9:29).

An evil heart. Jer. 7:24²⁴But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward. (Jeremiah 7:24).

God knows. Isa. 48:4⁴Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; (Isaiah 48:4).

Refusing to hearken to God. Prov. 1:24²⁴Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; (Proverbs 1:24).

Refusing to hearken to the messengers of God. 1 Sam. 8:19¹⁹Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; (1 Samuel 8:19). Jer. 44:16¹⁶As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee. (Jeremiah 44:16). Zech. 7:11¹¹But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. (Zechariah 7:11).

Refusing to walk in the ways of God. Neb. 9:17. Psa. 78:10¹⁰They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; (Psalm 78:10). Isa. 42:24²⁴Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the Lord, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. (Isaiah 42:24). Jer. 6:16¹⁶Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. (Jeremiah 6:16).

Refusing to hearken to parents. Deut. 21:18, 19¹⁸If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: ¹⁹Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; (Deuteronomy 21:18‑19).

Refusing to receive correction. Deut. 21:18¹⁸If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: (Deuteronomy 21:18). Jer. 5:3³O Lord, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. (Jeremiah 5:3). Jer. 7:28²⁸But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the Lord their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth. (Jeremiah 7:28).

Rebelling against God. Deut. 31:27²⁷For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the Lord; and how much more after my death? (Deuteronomy 31:27). Psa. 78:8⁸And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God. (Psalm 78:8).

Resisting the Holy Ghost. Acts 7:51⁵¹Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. (Acts 7:51).

Walking in the counsels of an evil heart. Jer. 7:24²⁴But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward. (Jeremiah 7:24). with Jer. 23:17¹⁷They say still unto them that despise me, The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. (Jeremiah 23:17).

Hardening the neck. Neh. 9:16¹⁶But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, (Nehemiah 9:16).

Hardening the heart. 2 Chr. 36:13¹³And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the Lord God of Israel. (2 Chronicles 36:13).

Going backward and not forward. Jer. 7:24²⁴But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward. (Jeremiah 7:24).

Heinousness of. 1 Sam. 15:23²³For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king. (1 Samuel 15:23).

MINISTERS SHOULD

Be without. Titus 1:7⁷For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; (Titus 1:7).

Warn their people against. Heb. 3:7-12⁷Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, ⁸Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: ⁹When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. ¹⁰Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. ¹¹So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) ¹²Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. (Hebrews 3:7‑12).

Pray that their people may be forgiven for. Ex. 34:9⁹And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance. (Exodus 34:9). Deut. 9:27²⁷Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin: (Deuteronomy 9:27).

Characteristic of the wicked. Prov. 7:11¹¹(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: (Proverbs 7:11). 2 Peter 2:10¹⁰But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. (2 Peter 2:10).

The wicked cease not from. Judg. 2:19¹⁹And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. (Judges 2:19).

Punishment for. Deut. 21:21²¹And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. (Deuteronomy 21:21). Prov. 29:1¹He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. (Proverbs 29:1).

Illustrated. Psa. 32:9⁹Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. (Psalm 32:9). Jer. 31:18¹⁸I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God. (Jeremiah 31:18).

Exemplified. Simeon and Levi, Gen. 49:6⁶O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honor, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. (Genesis 49:6). Israelites, Ex. 32:9⁹And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: (Exodus 32:9). Deut. 9:6, 13⁶Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people. (Deuteronomy 9:6)
¹³Furthermore the Lord spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: (Deuteronomy 9:13). Saul, 1 Sam. 15:19-23¹⁹Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord? ²⁰And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. ²¹But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal. ²²And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? David, 2 Sam. 24:4⁴Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. (2 Samuel 24:4). Josiah, 2 Chr. 35:22²²Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. (2 Chronicles 35:22). Zedekiah, 2 Chr. 36:13¹³And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the Lord God of Israel. (2 Chronicles 36:13).
