Mark 14:1‑15:47• 1{i}Now the Passover and the [feast of] unleavened bread was after two days. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might seize him{/i} by craft and kill him.
2{i}For they said, Not{/i} in the feast, lest there be a tumult of the people.
3{i}And when he was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he lay at table, there came a woman having an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly; and having broken the alabaster flask, she poured it out upon his head.{/i}
4{i}And{/i} there were some indignant in themselves, and saying, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
5{i}for this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor. And they spoke very angrily at her.{/i}
6{i}But Jesus said,{/i} Let her alone; why do ye trouble her? She hath wrought a good work as to me;
7{i}for ye have the poor always with you, and whenever ye would ye can do them good; but me ye have not always.{/i}
8She hath done what she could: she has beforehand anointed my body for the burial.
9Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached throughout the whole world, what this woman hath done shall be also spoken of for a memorial of her.
10{i}And Judas Iscariote, one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests that he might deliver him up to them;{/i}
11{i}and they, when they heard it, rejoiced, and promised him to give money. And he sought how he could opportunely deliver him up.{/i}
12{i}And the first day of unleavened bread, when they slew the Passover, his disciples say to him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare, that thou mayest eat the Passover?{/i}
13{i}And{/i} he sends two of his disciples, and says to them, Go into the city, and a man shall meet you carrying a pitcher of water: follow him.
14And wheresoever he enters, say to the master of the house, The Teacher says, Where is my guest-chamber, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
15And he will show you a large upper room furnished ready: there make ready for us.
16{i}And his disciples went away and came into the city, and found as he had said to them; and they made ready the Passover.{/i}
17And when it was evening he comes with the twelve.
18And as they lay at table and were eating, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you that eateth with me shall deliver me up.
19And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one, Is it I? [and another said, Is it I?]
20{i}But he answered and said to them,{/i} One of the twelve, he who dippeth with me in the dish.
21The Son of man goeth indeed as it is written concerning him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up. Good [were it] for that man if he had not been born.
22{i}And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken bread, when he had blessed, broke [it], and gave [it] to them, and said, Take [this]:{/i} this is my body.
23{i}And having taken [the] cup, when he had given thanks, he gave [it] to them, and they all drank out of it.{/i}
24{i}And he said to them, This is my{/i} blood of the [new] covenant, shed for many.
25{i}Verily I say to you, I will no more drink at all of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.{/i}
26{i}And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.{/i}
27{i}And Jesus says to them,{/i} All ye shall be offended; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered abroad.
28But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
29{i}But Peter said to him, Even if all should be offended, yet not I.{/i}
30{i}And Jesus says to him,{/i} Verily I say unto thee, that thou this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt thrice deny me.
31But he spoke [the more] vehemently, If I should have to die with thee, I will in no wise deny thee. And likewise also said they all.
32{i}And they come to a place of which the name [is] Gethsemane, and he says to his disciples, Sit here while I shall pray.{/i}
33{i}And he takes with him Peter and James and John, and he began to be{/i} amazed and deeply depressed.
34And he says to them, My soul is full of grief even unto death; tarry here and watch.
35{i}And{/i} he went forward a little and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
36{i}And he said,{/i} Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee. Take away this cup from me; but not what I will, but what thou [wilt].
37{i}And he comes and finds them sleeping. And he says to Peter, Simon,{/i} sleepest thou? hast thou not been able to watch one hour?
38Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh weak;
39and again he went away and prayed, and spoke the same words,
40and when he returned, he found them asleep again (for their eyes were heavy), and they knew not what to answer him.
41And he comes the third time, and says to them, Sleep on now and take your rest; it is enough. The hour is come; behold, the Son of man is delivered up into the hands of sinners.
42Arise, let us go; behold, he that delivereth me up is at hand.
43And immediately, while he was yet speaking, Judas comes up, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44{i}Now he that delivered him up had given them a sign between them, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; seize him, and lead [him] away safely.{/i}
45{i}And being come, straightway coming up to him, he says,{/i} Rabbi, Rabbi, and covered him with kisses;
46and they laid their hands on him and took him.
47{i}But a certain one of those who stood by, having drawn his sword, struck the bondman of the high priest, and took off his ear.{/i}
48{i}And Jesus answering said to them, Are ye come out as against a robber, with swords and sticks to take me?{/i}
49{i}I was daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me; but [it is] that the scriptures may be fulfilled.{/i}
50And all forsook him and fled.
51And a certain young man followed him, with a linen cloth cast about his naked body: and [the young men] seize him;
52but he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
53And they led Jesus away to the high-priest. And with him are assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
54And Peter from afar off followed him, even within, into the court of the high priest, and was sitting with the officials and warming himself at the [fire] light.
55And the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrim sought for witness against Jesus to cause him to be put to death; and found none.
56{i}For many bore false witness against him, and their testimony did not agree.{/i}
57{i}And certain persons rose up and bore false witness against him, saying,{/i}
58{i}We heard him saying, I will destroy this temple which is made with hands, and in the course of three days I will build another not made with hands.{/i}
59{i}And neither thus did their testimony agree.{/i}
60{i}And the high priest, rising up before them all, asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? What do these testify against thee?{/i}
61{i}But he was silent, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and says to him,{/i} Art thou the Christ, the Son of the blessed?
62{i}And Jesus said,{/i} I am, and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.
63Then the high-priest, having rent his clothes, says, What need have we any more of witnesses?
64Ye have heard the blasphemy. What think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
65And some began to spit on him, and to cover up his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him, Prophesy: and the officers received him with the palms of their hands.
66As Peter was beneath in the palace-court, one of the maids of the high-priest comes:
67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked upon him and said, And thou wast with the Nazarene Jesus.
68But he denied, saying, I know not [him], nor understand what thou sayest. And he went out into the fore-court: and a cock crew.
69And the maid, seeing him, again began to say to the bystanders, This is [one] of them.
70And he again kept denying. And after a little again the bystanders were saying to Peter, Truly thou art [one] of them; for also thou art a Galilean.
71But he began to curse and to swear, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
72And [immediately] a second time a cock crew. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus said to him, Before [the] cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon he wept.
1{i}And immediately in the morning the chief priests, having taken counsel with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrim, bound Jesus and carried [him] away, and delivered [him] up to Pilate.{/i}
2And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said to him, Thou sayest [it].
3{i}And the chief priests accused him urgently.{/i}
4And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
5But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.
6But at that feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whomsoever they begged.
7And there was one named Barabbas, who lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.
8And the multitude, crying aloud, began to beg him [to do] as he had ever done unto them.
9But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release to you the King of the Jews?
10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up through envy.
11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
12And Pilate answered and said again to them, What will ye, then, that I shall do to him whom ye call [the] King of the Jews?
13And they cried out again, Crucify him.
14{i}And Pilate said to them,{/i} What evil, then, has he done? And they cried out exceedingly, Crucify him.
15{i}And{/i} Pilate, desirous of contenting the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
16{i}And{/i} the soldiers led him away into the court [called] Praetorium, and they call together the whole band.
17And they clothed him with purple, and bind round on him a crown of thorns which they had plaited.
18And they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
19{i}And{/i} they struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and, bending the knee, worshipped him.
20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own garments on him, and lead him out to crucify him.
21And they compel one Simon, a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus to carry his cross.
22And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, Place of a skull.
23And they offered him [to drink] wine medicated with myrrh: but he did not take it.
24And having crucified him, they part his garments, casting lots upon them, what each should take.
25{i}And{/i} it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
26And the superscription of what he was accused of was written over, The King of the Jews.
27{i}And with him they crucify two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left.{/i}
28(Verse not included in this translation).
29And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, Aha, thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days,
30save thyself, and come down from the cross.
31{i}In like manner the chief priests also,{/i} said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
32Let Christ the King of Israel come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. {i}And they that were crucified with him reproached him.{/i}
33And when [the] sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour.
34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice [saying], Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
35And some of those that stood by, when they heard [it], said, Behold, he calls for Elias.
36And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and fixed it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone, let us see whether Elias comes to take him down.
37And Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, expired.
38{i}And{/i} the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom.
39{i}And the centurion who stood by over against him, when he saw that he had expired having thus cried out, said,{/i} Truly this man was Son of God.
40{i}And there were women also looking on from afar off, among whom were both Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;{/i}
41{i}who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered to him; and many others who came up with him to Jerusalem.{/i}
42And when it was already evening, as it was [the] preparation, that is, [the day] before a Sabbath,
43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, who himself was awaiting the kingdom of God, came, and took courage, and went in to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
44{i}And{/i} Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and calling to [him] the centurion, he asked him if he had been long dead.
45{i}And when he knew from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.{/i}
46{i}And he{/i} bought fine linen [and] took him down, and swathed him in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was cut out of a rock, and rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre.
47{i}And Mary of Magdala and Mary the [mother] of Joses saw where he was put.{/i} (Mark 14:1‑15:47)
John 18:1‑19:42• 1Having said these things Jesus went out with his disciples beyond the torrent-bed of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.
2And Judas also that was delivering him up knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3Judas then, having received the band and officials from the high priests and from [the] Pharisees, cometh there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4Jesus then, knowing all things that were coming on him, went out and saith to them, Whom seek ye?
5They answered him, Jesus the Nazarean. Jesus saith to them, I am [he]. And Judas that was delivering him up was standing with them.
6When then he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground.
7Again then he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazarean.
8Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if then ye seek me, leave these to go away;
9that the word might be fulfilled which he said, Of those whom thou hast given me, I have lost not one of them.
10Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. Now the bondsman's name was Malchus.
11Jesus said then to Peter, Put the sword into the scabbard: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
12The band therefore and the commander , and the officials of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him
13and led [him away] unto Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest of that year.
14But it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15Now Simon Peter was following Jesus and the other disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest,
16but Peter was standing at the door outside. The other disciple therefore, that was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the porteress and brought in Peter.
17The maid therefore, the porteress, saith to Peter, Art thou also of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18But the bondmen and the officials were standing, having made a coal-fire because it was cold, and were warming themselves; and there was with them Peter standing and warming himself.
19The high priest then asked Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.
20Jesus answered, I have openly spoken in the world, I always taught in [the] synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble, and in secret I spoke nothing:
21why askest thou me? Ask those that have heard, what I spoke to them: behold, these know what I said.
22But when he said these things, one of the officials as he stood by gave Jesus a slap on the face, saying, Thus answerest thou the high priest?
23Jesus answered him, If I spoke ill, testify of the ill; but if well, why smitest thou me?
24Annas [therefore] sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art thou also of his disciples? He denied and said, I am not.
26One of the bondmen of the high priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did I not see thee in the garden with him?
27Peter therefore denied again, and immediately a cock crew.
28They led then Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium; and it was early; and they entered not into the Praetorium that they might not be defiled but eat the Passover.
29Pilate then went out unto them, and saith, What accusation do ye bring against this man?
30They answered and said to him, If this [man] were not an evil-doer, we should not have delivered him up to thee.
31Pilate therefore said to them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said to him, It is not allowed to us to put anyone to death;
32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said signifying by what death he should die.
33Pilate then again entered into the Praetorium, and called Jesus and said to him, Art thou the king of the Jews?
34Jesus answered, Of thyself sayest thou this, or did others say [it] to thee about me?
35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests delivered thee up to me: what didst thou?
36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.
37Pilate then said to him, Art thou then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And having said this, he again went out unto the Jews, and saith to them, I find no fault in him;
39but ye have a custom that I should release one to you at the Passover: will ye therefore that I release to you the king of the Jews?
40T h ey all cried then again, saying, Not this [man] but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged [him].
2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put [it] on his head, and clothed him with a purple garment,
3and were coming to him and saying, Hail, King of the Jews! and gave him slaps on the face.
4And Pilate went out again and saith to them, Behold, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find no fault [in him].
5Jesus therefore came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment, and he saith to them, Behold, the man!
6When then the chief priests and the officials saw him, they cried, Crucify, crucify. Pilate saith to them, Take ye him, and crucify; for I find no fault in him.
7The Jews answered, We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself Son of God.
8When Pilate therefore heard this word, he was the more afraid,
9and entered into the Praetorium again, and saith to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
10Pilate saith to him, Speakest thou not to me? Knowest thou not that I have authority to release thee, and I have authority to crucify thee?
11Jesus answered, Thou hadst no authority at all against me except it were given thee from above: on this account he that delivered me up to thee hath greater sin.
12From this [time] Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews kept crying, saying, If thou wilt release this [man], thou art not a friend of Caesar: every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
13Pilate then, having heard these words, led Jesus out and sat down on [the] judgment seat at a place called Pavement, but in Hebrew Gabbatha.
14Now it was [the] preparation of the Passover; it was about sixth hour. And he saith to the Jews, Behold, your king.
15They cried therefore, Away with [him], away with [him]; crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16Then therefore he delivered him up to them that he might be crucified. They took then Jesus [and led (him) away];
17and bearing for himself the cross he went out unto the place called of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha,
18where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side and on that, and Jesus in the middle.
19And also Pilate wrote a title and put [it] on the cross; and there was written Jesus the Nazarean, the king of the Jews.
20This title therefore many of the Jews read, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Latin.
21Therefore said the high priest of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The king of the Jews, but that he said, I am king of the Jews.
22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23The soldiers therefore, when they crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and the vest; but the vest was seamless from the top woven through the whole.
24They said therefore unto one another, Let us not rend it, but let us draw lots for it whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled that saith, They parted my garments for themselves, and for my vesture they cast lots. The soldiers therefore did these things.
25Now by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.
26Jesus therefore, seeing his mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved, saith to his mother, Woman, behold, thy son.
27Next he saith to the disciple, Behold, thy mother; and from that hour the disciple took her unto his own [home].
28After this Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be accomplished, saith, I thirst.
29A vessel [therefore] was standing there full of vinegar; and they, having filled a sponge with vinegar and put hyssop round [it], put [it] up to his mouth.
30When therefore Jesus received the vinegar, he said, It is finished, and bowing his head delivered up his spirit.
31The Jews therefore, since it was the preparation, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for the day of that Sabbath was great), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and they be taken away.
32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first and of the other that was crucified with him;
33but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they broke not his legs,
34but one of the soldiers with a spear thrust his side, and there came out immediately blood and water.
35And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true, and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also may believe.
36For these things came to pass that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be crushed;
37and again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
38And after these things Joseph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave leave. He came therefore and took his body away.
39And there came also Nicodemus, that came at first to him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes about a hundred pound [weight],
40They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it in linen swathes with the spices, as it is the Jews' custom to prepare for burial.
41Now there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was ever yet laid.
42There then on account of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they put Jesus. (John 18:1‑19:42)
