John 10:22• 22And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. (John 10:22)
• “The feast of the dedication.” After Antiochus Epiphanes captured Jerusalem in 170 B.C., he slew 80,000 Jews and defiled the temple by offering up swine (Dan. 11:31; 8:9-14). Judas Maccabeus (165 B.C.) conquered him and restored temple worship on the twenty-fifth of the month Chisleu (answering to December), “and it was winter.” The Jews voluntarily instituted this traditional feast at the same time of the pagan feast of Saturnalia. Christendom likewise arbitrarily adopted the date, calling it the birthday of Christ. (“Help on Hard Verses” by A.C. Brown)
