 On the death of this “mighty king,” after various contentions and conflicts, his kingdom was “divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity,” but by four of his generals. Two of these kingdoms soon disappeared; and two remained until about 50 B.C., and these are the two under the appellations of the “king of the south” and the “king of the north” that are found in this narrative. One thing must be borne in mind in following the narrative, and that is that the king of the north and the king of the south do not always designate the same persons.
