Contempt

Sin of. Job 31:13, 14¹³If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; ¹⁴What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? (Job 31:13‑14). Prov. 14:21²¹He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. (Proverbs 14:21).

Folly of. Prov. 11:12¹²He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbor: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace. (Proverbs 11:12).

A characteristic of the wicked. Prov. 18:3³When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach. (Proverbs 18:3). Isa. 5:24²⁴Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 5:24). 2 Tim. 3:3³Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, (2 Timothy 3:3).

FORBIDDEN TOWARDS

Parents. Prov. 23:22²²Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. (Proverbs 23:22).

Christ's little ones. Matt. 18:10¹⁰Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:10).

Weak brethren. Rom. 14:3³Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. (Romans 14:3).

Young ministers. 1 Cor. 16:11¹¹Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren. (1 Corinthians 16:11).

Believing masters. 1 Tim. 6:2²And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. (1 Timothy 6:2).

The poor. James 2:1-3¹My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. ²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; ³And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: (James 2:1‑3).

Self-righteousness prompts to. Isa. 65:5⁵Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. (Isaiah 65:5). Luke 18:9, 11⁹And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: (Luke 18:9)
¹¹The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. (Luke 18:11).

Pride and prosperity prompt to. Psa. 123:4⁴Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud. (Psalm 123:4).

Ministers should give no occasion for. 1 Tim. 4:12¹²Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12).

Of ministers, is a despising of God. Luke 10:16¹⁶He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. (Luke 10:16). 1 Thess. 4:8⁸He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 4:8).

TOWARDS THE CHURCH

Often turned into respect. Isa. 60:14¹⁴The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 60:14).

Often punished. Ezek. 28:26²⁶And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the Lord their God. (Ezekiel 28:26). Causes saints to cry unto God. Neh. 4:4⁴Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: (Nehemiah 4:4). Psa. 123:3³Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. (Psalm 123:3).

THE WICKED EXHIBIT TOWARDS

Christ. Psa. 22:6⁶But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. (Psalm 22:6). Isa. 53:3³He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isaiah 53:3). Matt. 27:29²⁹And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! (Matthew 27:29).

Saints. Psa. 119:141¹⁴¹I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts. (Psalm 119:141).

Authorities. 2 Peter 2:10¹⁰But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. (2 Peter 2:10). Jude 8⁸Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. (Jude 8). Parents. Prov. 15:5, 20⁵A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. (Proverbs 15:5)
²⁰A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother. (Proverbs 15:20).

The afflicted. Job 19:18¹⁸Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me. (Job 19:18).

The poor. Psa. 14:6⁶Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge. (Psalm 14:6). Ecc. 9:16.

Saints sometimes guilty of. James 2:6⁶But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? (James 2:6).

Exemplified. Hagar, Gen. 16:4⁴And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. (Genesis 16:4), Children of Belial 1 Sam, 14. Nabal, 1 Sam. 15:10;11¹⁰Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying, (1 Samuel 15:10)
¹⁰Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. (1 Samuel 11:10). Michal. 2 Sam. 6:16¹⁶And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. (2 Samuel 6:16). Sanballat, &c. Neh. 2:19¹⁹But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? (Nehemiah 2:19). Neh. 4:2, 3²And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? ³Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. (Nehemiah 4:2‑3). False teacher's 2 Cor. 10:10¹⁰For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. (2 Corinthians 10:10).
