AN ADVOCATE. 1 John 2:1¹My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (1 John 2:1).

A bba, the name to saints so dear,

The Spirit loves to cry. Rom. 8:15¹⁵For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (Romans 8:15).

N ew creatures they, who Christ receive;

Their hopes are fixed on high. 2 Cor. 5:17¹⁷Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17).

A himelech gave to David’s hand

A sword most dearly won. 1 Sam. 21:7⁷Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. (1 Samuel 21:7).

D elilah’s wiles poor Samson left

All weakened and undone. Judg. 16:18¹⁸And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath showed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. (Judges 16:18).

V enison was to Isaac’s heart

A snare, God’s word to hide. Gen. 27:3³Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; (Genesis 27:3).

O thniel won the fertile spot,

And with it gained a bride. Judg. 1:13¹³And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. (Judges 1:13).

C armel was where Elijah prayed,

And God with rain replied 1 Kings 18:42⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, (1 Kings 18:42).

A anon ascended Mount Hor’s height,

‘Twas there he meekly died. Num. 20:28²⁸And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount. (Numbers 20:28).

T abitha’s death w’ sorely felt,

By those who shared her love. Acts 9:20²⁰And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. (Acts 9:20).

E liab’s angry words did fail,

Young David’s faith to move. 1 Sam. 17:28²⁸And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. (1 Samuel 17:28).
