(devoted). The devoted thing, if inanimate, fell to the priests (Num. 18:18¹⁸And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are thine. (Numbers 18:18)); if animate, it was to be slain (Lev. 27:28-29²⁸Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the Lord of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the Lord. ²⁹None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death. The word ἀνάθεμα was used for any votive offering in a heathen temple, which could not be redeemed; hence anything devoted. In the New Testament it is devoted to God’s curse, destruction.
