A.M. 3233.
B.C. 771.
Pul.Prideaux supposes that this Pul was the father of the famous Sardanapalus, who was called Sardan with his father's name Pul annexed, as was frequent in those times, making Sardanpul: thus Merodach, king of Babylon, was Merodach-Baladan, because he was the son Baladan.
This Pul began to reign according to Usher, A.M. 3237, the fifth year of Menahem; and he is supposed to be the same that reigned in Nineveh, when Jonah preached in that city.

2 Kings 12:18• 18And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold found in the treasures of the house of Jehovah and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria; and he went away from Jerusalem. 2 Kings 16:8• 8And Ahaz took the silver and the gold that was found in the house of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king's house, and sent it as a present to the king of Assyria. (2 Kings 16:8)

2 Kings 17:3‑4• 3Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria, and Hoshea became his servant, and tendered him presents.
4But the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and sent up no present to the king of Assyria as he had done from year to year. And the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison.

Hos. 8:9‑10• 9For they are gone up to Assyria as a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.

Hos. 10:6• 6Yea, it shall be carried unto Assyria as a present for king Jareb: Ephraim shall be seized with shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. (Hos. 10:6)
to confirm.
This is the first king of Assyria whose name is mentioned in biblical history. This personage has occasioned much debate among critics, who seem to agree now to consider him identical with Tiglath-Pileser, one of the greatest and best-known among the Assyrian monarchs (2 Kings 15:29; 16:7; etc.). In keeping simply to the letter of Scripture, we shall rather be led to see in Pul, king of Assyria, a distinct person, according to what is told us in 1 Chronicle 5:26. (Shallum and Menahem, Kings of Israel: 2 Kings 15:13-22 by H.L. Rossier)
Hosea mentions the fact that is before us now: Ephraim went “to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb; but he was unable to heal you, nor hath he removed your sore” (Hos. 5:13). This king Jareb may well be none other than Pul. His name means, “He who contests:" doubtless an allusion to the combative power of the Assyrian, whom Israel thought to appease. (Shallum and Menahem, Kings of Israel: 2 Kings 15:13-22 by H.L. Rossier)
