Before the captivity the willow was an emblem of joy

(Lev. 23:40⁴⁰And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. (Leviticus 23:40); Job 40:22²²The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. (Job 40:22); Isa. 44:4⁴And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. (Isaiah 44:4)); but in allusion to the captivity, the weeping willow of Babylonia became the poetical type of sorrow (Psa. 137:2²We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. (Psalm 137:2)). The “brook of willows” (Isa. 15:7⁷Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the brook of the willows. (Isaiah 15:7)), was in the land of Moab, and is called “valley of Arabians” in margin.

Salix Babylonica

Supposed to be the Salix Babylonica. Its boughs were used at the Feast of Tabernacles, a season of joy; but at the captivity and since, it is a symbol of sorrow. It was on such that the captives hung their harps when in captivity, of which the Psalmist spoke prophetically (Lev. 23:40⁴⁰And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. In Ezekiel 17:5⁵He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree. (Ezekiel 17:5) thy word is tsaphtsaphah, supposed by some to be the Arabic safsaf, a willow or osier which grows by the water.
