Warfare

Listen from:
In the history of wars, we often remember the important commanders or statesmen, their choices and how their character and choices affected the outcome of the war. We remember men like Joshua, David, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, Dwight Eisenhower and others for that reason. You and I are soldiers in a war. It is important for us to know and fully trust our supreme commander. When Joshua was about to lead the children of Israel in the battles for the conquest of the land of Israel, he met his commander. “The captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so” (Josh. 5:1515And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:15)). Absolute and holy obedience is our place to take with our commander. We do well to remember a lesson from the combat between the people of Israel and the Philistines. The men of Israel compared themselves to the giant Goliath and were afraid to face him in combat. Then young David comes into the picture. Does he compare himself to Goliath as the others did? No, he has a different and correct view of Goliath and the war. “David spake to the men that stood by him, saying,  ... who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Sam. 17:2626And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? (1 Samuel 17:26)). May we follow our commander with the same spirit found in Joshua and David.
