(watch). A guard-room or lock-up (Gen. 40:3³And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. (Genesis 40:3); Acts 12:10¹⁰When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. (Acts 12:10)). A garrison or military post (Neh. 12:25²⁵Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were porters keeping the ward at the thresholds of the gates. (Nehemiah 12:25)). A detachment of persons, guard, for any purpose (1 Chron. 9:23²³So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards. (1 Chronicles 9:23); Neh. 13:30³⁰Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business; (Nehemiah 13:30)).
