The Frightening Morning of December 6, 1917

Listen from:
Kay McLeod was just five years old when a terrible explosion shook the entire city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she and her family were living. Two large ships collided in the harbor, one of which was loaded with wartime explosives. It quickly caught on fire, and then there was a massive explosion!
Although she is 103 years old now, Kay remembers it all very well. She has a clear memory of flying in the air at the moment of the blast and landing on the floor. She had a Bible and hymnbook in her hand, and she says that was what saved her life. However, those two books were never found in the rubble of their damaged home.
About 2,000 people were killed that morning by flying debris, fires and collapsed buildings, and about 9,000 others were injured. No one in Kay’s family was killed, but their home on Agricola Street was so badly damaged they couldn’t stay there. Kay remembers that after the explosion, her bed was made up of four chairs, until the family had a new place to live.
Although Kay feels the Bible and hymnbook saved her life that day, we know that only trusting and receiving the Lord Jesus as your very own Saviour can save your never-dying soul and give you an everlasting life with Him in His safe and happy home in heaven. John 6:4747Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. (John 6:47) promises, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me hath everlasting life.”
We hope Kay accepted the Lord Jesus as her very own Saviour as a young child, because owning a Bible and a hymnbook will not give anyone everlasting life. Even very young children can understand that disobeying their parents is sin, and it’s our sins that will keep us out of God’s perfect, sinless heaven.
Do you know that even if you are a young child, the Lord Jesus loves you very much and died on Calvary’s cross so you can have your sins paid for? You will need to tell Him that you are sorry for your sins and you want Him to wash them away. If you will do that, He promises your sins are gone forever, and that opens the door for you to live in heaven one day. “I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:99I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (John 10:9)).
A little child of seven,
Or even three or four,
May enter into heaven
Through Christ the open Door.
For when the heart believeth
On Christ, the Son of God,
‘Tis then the soul receiveth
Salvation through His blood.
