The First Shall be Last

Listen from:
Peter raises the question with our Lord, “Behold, we have forsaken all and followed Thee: what shall we have therefore?” (Matt. 19:2727Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? (Matthew 19:27)). Our Lord shows that God will be debtor to no man, and that for every loss on account of His name every one shall receive again a hundredfold and inherit life eternal. But He adds the cautionary words, Many first shall be last, and last first. For as Christ is the motive where faith is, reward is but the encouragement to him that follows the Savior; it cheers him when already on the way. Make the reward the object, and all becomes mercenary. Even where Christ is the constraining power, there is danger of clouding Him under an overly large estimate of our sacrifices for His sake. In every case however God never forgets but assuredly repays.
