27. Will the Lord Come Personally or by the Spirit?
Personally. The Lord said, “I will come again” (John 14:33And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:3)). Luke said, “This same Jesus shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:1111Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:11)). Paul said, “The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven” (1 Thess. 4:1616For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (1 Thessalonians 4:16)). The Spirit came at Pentecost (Acts 2), and will come again after the Lord has set up His kingdom on earth (Joel 2). Thus Scripture intimates two advents of our Lord — one past, the other future; as also two comings of the Spirit — one past, the other future.

28. Will the Lord’s Coming Be Pre-Millennial or Post-Millennial?
Pre-millennial it must be, for, “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection.” This obviously happens before the millennium, because the saints then “shall reign with Him a thousand years,” (Rev. 20:66Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (Revelation 20:6)). The epoch of the Church’s glory (Col. 3:44When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:4)), creation’s deliverance (Rom. 8:2121Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. (Romans 8:21)), and Israel’s blessedness (Psa. 102:1616When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory. (Psalm 102:16)) synchronize with and are dependent upon the Lord’s second and personal advent. The Son of Man is the nobleman of Luke 19, who “went into a far country, to receive for Himself a kingdom and to return,” which latter is at the commencement of the millennial reign of one thousand years; then at the end the kingdom is delivered up to God, even the Father, in absolute perfection (1 Cor. 15:2424Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. (1 Corinthians 15:24)).

29. What Will Be the Moral Condition of the World and of the Church Immediately Preceding the Lord’s Coming?
The Hebrew prophet says “darkness shall cover the earth and gross darkness the people” [which may be translated “peoples”] (Isa. 60:22For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. (Isaiah 60:2)). In other words, the Gentile world will be in a state of utter ignorance of God while truth and righteousness will be trampled upon, many then saying, “Who will show us any good?” (Psa. 4:66There be many that say, Who will show us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. (Psalm 4:6)). Good will have been vanished from the earth before Jehovah shines in glory and visits Zion in mercy. The Apostle Jude, in burning words and striking emblems, sketches Christendom-corruption from the conception of evil in the bosom of the Church till its destruction by the personal advent of the Lord with His saints, according to the earliest prophecy on record, that of Enoch delivered 3,500 years ago. The Christian profession will be one of complete apostasy at the coming of the Lord (Jude 4-184For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 9Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. 10But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. 11Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. 12These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. 14And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. 16These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. 17But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. (Jude 4‑18)). The last phase of the professing Church, which is rapidly developing, will be one of utter loathing and disgust to Christ. When He has rejected her, then the “beast” (civil power of Rome) will take her up (Rev. 3:1616So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:16); Rev. 17). There is at present a marked and decided return to the ancient philosophy of heathenism, as well as to the subverting of Christianity itself.

30. Will Christendom Continue in the Goodness and Mercy of God?
No. The Christian profession is warned by the example and fate of Israel, and threatened with a like excision if she does not continue in the divine goodness (Rom. 11). The kingdom of heaven (baptized Christendom) is likened to a field consisting of wheat and tares (of mingled good and evil) and to a woman inserting leaven (always the type of evil) in the pure meal “till the whole was leavened.” It is also compared to a net full of fishes — good and bad (Matt. 13). The seven parables of that chapter also show that evil will exist and increase till dealt with by the Lord Himself. Christendom has not continued in the goodness and mercy of God (see also 1 Tim. 4; 2 Tim. 3; Jude; Rev. 2-3).

31. Will Evil Increase or Decrease Before the Lord Comes?

34. Distinguish Between Christ’s Coming for His People and His Coming With Them.
The return of the Lord from heaven accompanied by all His saints and angels to rule and reign over the earth is the great theme of the prophets. That coming will be marked by divine majesty and power. It is obvious, however, that there must have been a “taking up” of the saints to the Lord before they could possibly accompany Him in His glorious return to earth. The only passage which unfolds in detail the catching up of the saints as introductory to their return with the Lord is 1 Thessalonians 4:15-1715For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:15‑17). The Lord, then, will come Himself, unattended and without any displayed glory. He will descend into the “air” to meet His redeemed. The “shout,” “voice,” and “trump” are heard only by His own. Others are not here in question. The dead will be raised and the living changed, and all “together” caught up to meet the Lord. He will descend from heaven; we will ascend from earth and thus meet our LORD. The meeting place, “the air,” is only once thus named in Scripture. Where we meet is important, but who we meet is the point for the heart attached to Jesus. This beautiful order is a distinct and specific revelation to the Apostle. Such I take to be the force of the words, “This we say unto you by the Word of the Lord.” Take any of the numerous passages which speak of the glory of Christ’s second advent, and contrast them with this beautiful Scripture, and the difference between His personal and private descent into the air for His own, and the after event, His glorious appearing with His saints, will be at once perceived. The distinction between His coming into the “air” for His own (1 Thess. 4:1717Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. This latter event stands connected with the whole scheme of prophecy; the former is a personal matter between the Lord and His people, and is entirely outside the range of, and stands distinctly apart from, all prophetic and other subjects. Our hope is independent of circumstances. Not a single passage in the Old Testament speaks of the coming for the saints; they all refer to the coming with the saints, as “the Lord my God shall come and all the saints with thee” (Zech. 14:55And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. 36. Does Death Interfere With Our Hope, the Coming or Presence of the Lord?
Death cannot touch the “blessed hope.” Some are waiting with the Lord in His own immediate presence; others are waiting on the earth for Him. Whether therefore we “wake or sleep,” we wait for the Lord to come. Death may change the “waiting room,” but not the waiting position itself. The sleepers will accompany Jesus on His road to glory and the kingdom equally with the living (1 Thess. 4:1414For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. (1 Thessalonians 4:14)). Jesus is “expecting” (Heb. 10:1313From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. The Lord Jesus Christ is Himself expressly declared to be “our hope” (1 Tim. 1:11Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; (1 Timothy 1:1)). This “blessed hope,” therefore, is independent of prophetic or other events. He will come Himself. Far beyond the glory that will dazzle by its exceeding brightness, confounding the schemes of the wise, and laying low the proud and haughty pretensions of man, is the infinitely deeper because distinctly moral glory in the person of the Lord. We look for a person to come, even “Him who delivered us from the wrath to come.” We wait for Jesus: that is our hope; it is neither crown, harp, robe, glory, nor kingdom, but Himself. It is well termed “that blessed or happy hope.”
“The glorious appearing,” or, “appearing of the glory,” does not refer to Christ’s coming for His saints, but to the after event — His coming with them. It is called the “appearing of the glory,” because the world, angels, and the Church will witness it. It will be a grand public event, a spectacle worthy of the coming Christ; many dignities will be His in that day (Rev. 19:1212His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. (Revelation 19:12)). As a saint, I wait for that blessed hope; as a servant, I look for the appearing of the glory. The former is entirely of grace, the latter is connected with my responsibility. In the one I am more immediately occupied with Himself as the morning star; in the other, with the glory connected with the kingdom.

The contrast in the verse is between the dead in Christ and the living in Christ; certainly not between the righteous dead and the wicked dead, as some have strangely enough supposed. The context in this, as elsewhere, decides the point. The meaning is, “the dead in Christ” shall rise before the living are changed. Priority is accorded to those who sleep, but all will be done in the twinkling of an eye. The first, then, who will respond to the Lord’s shout and voice will be the dead; “then we who are alive and remain.” Such is the divine order, and such seems to be the purport of the words, “The dead in Christ shall rise first.”

The Old Testament saints and others, such as John Baptist, who may have died before the descent of the Holy Ghost to form the Church at Pentecost, (Acts 2), are raised to share the millennial glory of Christ. I apprehend that they are the guests at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19:99And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. (Revelation 19:9)), as also the Bridegroom’s friends (John 3:2929He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. (John 3:29)). The bride and the guests surely are distinct. At the “voice” of the Son “they that are Christ’s at His coming” (1 Cor. 15:2323But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. (1 Corinthians 15:23)) shall be raised. Would any one venture to say that the Old Testament saints are not Christ’s? — that they do not belong to Him?
“They that are Christ’s at His coming” really decides the point. All saints, then, who have died from Adam up till the moment of the Lord’s descent into the air, according to 1 Thessalonians 4:16-1716For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:16‑17), will be raised as a whole to share with the living (who will then be changed) the heavenly glory of Christ.

The Thessalonians had been but lately converted, when the Apostle wrote them the first of the Pauline Epistles. They were living in immediate expectation of the return of God’s Son from heaven; but while waiting and watching, some had died. The enemy sought to disturb the minds of these fresh, affectionate, but not established saints by suggesting that their deceased brethren would lose somewhat in the glory of the coming reign. Not so, writes the apostle; “for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him”; and passing over the parenthetic verses 15-18, he adds: “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.” When God brings Christ into the world again, He will bring your deceased brethren with Him. The parenthetic verses unfold that which will take place previously. The dead will be raised and the living changed, and together meet Him in the “air.” After this “air” meeting has taken place, God will bring Jesus and the saints to earth.

(1 John 2:28); 2 John 88Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. (2 John 8); 2 Tim. 4). Luke 12 shows the contrast in verse 37, the blessed ones are simply watching, as Christ’s saints waited for the rapture, while in verse 43 the blessed ones are doing, faithfully fulfilling their obligations as servants.

In the previous verse Jesus announces Himself as the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. This awakens the tenderest affections of the bride and deeply stirs her heart, and she answers His presentation of Himself by saying to Him, “Come.” It is a happy fellowship greeting to the Blessed One, for the Spirit and the bride say “Come.” It is the united voice of the Spirit and the church. Individually, too, I have my part in the expressed yearning of heart for the coming of Jesus: “Let him that heareth say, Come.” Then follows the invitation to the sinner: “And let him that is athirst come.” This third “Come” is addressed to the sinner thirsting for the waters of eternal life. “And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely;” not the thirsty only, but all who “will” may come; the waters are free, and the invitation is creature-wide. “Whosoever will” excludes none, but may embrace all.

The words of difficulty are really simple if Christ is before the soul: “Unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” All are looking for Christ. The second advent of our Lord is a part of the faith of God’s elect. It is found embodied in every creed and confession in Christendom. The difficulty is not in the words, but in the enquirer’s mind. There may not be intelligent looking for Christ, but looking for Him is the all important point. To support the unscriptural theory that because some are not looking for Christ in the intelligence of the Word of God, therefore they will be left to pass through the great tribulation which succeeds the rapture of the Church, is directly opposed to the teaching of the Word of God. The verse does not say “Unto them that look for Him before the millennium”; it is not when or how He comes, but the fact that is stated. Every believer looks for Christ to come; some before, some after the millennium, others at the “last day;” but all are agreed in the truth that He will come, therefore He will appear to all believers the second time without sin (i.e., without reference to sin, that question being forever settled for believers at His first coming) unto salvation.

59. Is the Cleaving in Two of the Mount of Olives to Be Accepted As a Literal Statement?
Yes. The geographical position of the Mount, the extensive valley formed by its rupture, and other considerations which a careful perusal of Zechariah 14 would suggest, show that the cleaving of Olivet in two must be accepted in its literal import.
