Swearing, Profane.

Of all kinds is desecration of God's name and is forbidden. Ex. 20:7⁷Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Exodus 20:7). Mat. 5:34 36. Matt. 23:21, 22²¹And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. ²²And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. (Matthew 23:21‑22). James 5:12¹²But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. (James 5:12).

THE WICKED

Addicted to. Psa. 10:7⁷His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. (Psalm 10:7). Rom. 3:14¹⁴Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: (Romans 3:14).

Love. Psa. 109:17¹⁷As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. (Psalm 109:17).

Clothe themselves with. Psa. 109:18¹⁸As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. (Psalm 109:18)

Guilt of. Ex. 20:7⁷Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Exodus 20:7). Deut. 5:11¹¹Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Deuteronomy 5:11).

Woe denounced against. Matt. 23:16¹⁶Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! (Matthew 23:16).

Nations visited for. Jer. 23:10¹⁰For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right. (Jeremiah 23:10). Hos. 4:1-3¹Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. ²By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. ³Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. (Hosea 4:1‑3).

Punishment for. Lev. 24:16, 23¹⁶And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death. (Leviticus 24:16)
²³And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses. (Leviticus 24:23). Psa. 59:12¹²For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak. (Psalm 59:12). Exemplified. Son of Israelitish woman, Lev. 24:11¹¹And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) (Leviticus 24:11). Gehazi, 2 Kin. 5:20. Peter, Matt. 26:74⁷⁴Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. (Matthew 26:74).
