Sin-Offering.

Probable origin of. Gen. 4:4, 7⁴And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: (Genesis 4:4)
⁷If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. (Genesis 4:7).

WAS OFFERED

For sins of ignorance. Lev. 4:2, 13, 22, 27²Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them: (Leviticus 4:2)
¹³And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty; (Leviticus 4:13)
²²When a ruler hath sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the commandments of the Lord his God concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty; (Leviticus 4:22)
²⁷And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty; (Leviticus 4:27).

At the consecration of priests. Ex. 29:10, 14¹⁰And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock. (Exodus 29:10)
¹⁴But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering. (Exodus 29:14). Lev. 8:14¹⁴And he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering. (Leviticus 8:14).

At the consecration of Levites. Num. 8:8⁸Then let them take a young bullock with his meat offering, even fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin offering. (Numbers 8:8).

At the expiration of a Nazarite's vow. Num. 6:14¹⁴And he shall offer his offering unto the Lord, one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings, (Numbers 6:14).

On the Day of Atonement. Lev. 16:3, 9³Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. (Leviticus 16:3)
⁹And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. (Leviticus 16:9).

Was a most holy sacrifice. Lev. 6:25, 29²⁵Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the Lord: it is most holy. (Leviticus 6:25)
²⁹All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy. (Leviticus 6:29).

CONSISTED OF

A young bullock for priests. Lev. 4:3³If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the Lord for a sin offering. (Leviticus 4:3). Lev. 9:2, 8²And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. (Leviticus 9:2)
⁸Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. (Leviticus 9:8). Lev. 16:3, 6³Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. (Leviticus 16:3)
⁶And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house. (Leviticus 16:6).

A young bullock or he-goat for the congregation. Lev. 4:14¹⁴When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin, and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation. (Leviticus 4:14). Lev. 16:9⁹And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering. (Leviticus 16:9). 2 Chr. 29:23²³And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them: (2 Chronicles 29:23).

A male kid for a ruler. Lev. 4:23²³Or if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, come to his knowledge; he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a male without blemish: (Leviticus 4:23).

A female kid or female lamb for a private person. Lev. 4:28, 32²⁸Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned. (Leviticus 4:28)
³²And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish. (Leviticus 4:32).

Sins of the offerer transferred to, by imposition of hands. Lev. 4:4, 15, 24, 29⁴And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock's head, and kill the bullock before the Lord. (Leviticus 4:4)
¹⁵And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the Lord: and the bullock shall be killed before the Lord. (Leviticus 4:15)
²⁴And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord: it is a sin offering. (Leviticus 4:24)
²⁹And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering. (Leviticus 4:29). 2 Chr. 29:23²³And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them: (2 Chronicles 29:23).

Was killed in the same place as the burnt-offering. Lev. 4:24²⁴And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord: it is a sin offering. (Leviticus 4:24). Lev. 6:25²⁵Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the Lord: it is most holy. (Leviticus 6:25).

THE BLOOD OF,

For a priest or for the congregation, brought by the priest into the tabernacle. Lev. 4:5, 16⁵And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation: (Leviticus 4:5)
¹⁶And the priest that is anointed shall bring of the bullock's blood to the tabernacle of the congregation: (Leviticus 4:16).

For a priest or for the congregation, sprinkled seven times before the Lord, outside the vail, by the priest with his finger. Lev. 4:6, 17⁶And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the Lord, before the vail of the sanctuary. (Leviticus 4:6)
¹⁷And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord, even before the vail. (Leviticus 4:17).

For a priest or for the congregation, put upon the horns of the altar of incense. Lev. 4:7, 18⁷And the priest shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the Lord, which is in the tabernacle of the congregation; and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. (Leviticus 4:7)
¹⁸And he shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar which is before the Lord, that is in the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. (Leviticus 4:18).

For a ruler or for a private person put upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering by the priest with his finger. Lev. 4:25²⁵And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering. (Leviticus 4:25).

In every case poured at the foot of the altar of burnt-offering. Lee. 4:7, 18, 25, 30. Lev. 9:9⁹And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar: (Leviticus 9:9).

Fat of the inside, kidneys, &c. burned on the altar of burnt-offering. Lev. 4:19, 26, 31, 8-10¹⁹And he shall take all his fat from him, and burn it upon the altar. (Leviticus 4:19)
²⁶And he shall burn all his fat upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make an atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him. (Leviticus 4:26)
³¹And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savor unto the Lord; and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him. (Leviticus 4:31)
⁸And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullock for the sin offering; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, ⁹And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away, ¹⁰As it was taken off from the bullock of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall burn them upon the altar of the burnt offering. (Leviticus 4:8‑10). Lev. 9:10¹⁰But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as the Lord commanded Moses. (Leviticus 9:10).

When for a priest or the congregation, the skin, carcass, &c. burned without the camp. Lev. 4:11, 12, 21¹¹And the skin of the bullock, and all his flesh, with his head, and with his legs, and his inwards, and his dung, ¹²Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt. (Leviticus 4:11‑12)
²¹And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a sin offering for the congregation. (Leviticus 4:21). Lev. 6:30³⁰And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire. (Leviticus 6:30). Lev. 9:11¹¹And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp. (Leviticus 9:11).

Was eaten by the priests in a holy place, when its blood had not been brought into the tabernacle. Lev. 6:26, 29²⁶The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it: in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation. (Leviticus 6:26)
²⁹All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy. (Leviticus 6:29), with 30 v.

Aaron, &c. rebuked for burning and not eating that of the congregation, its blood not having been brought into the tabernacle. Lev. 10:16-18¹⁶And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying, ¹⁷Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord? ¹⁸Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded. (Leviticus 10:16‑18), with Lev. 9:9, 15⁹And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar: (Leviticus 9:9)
¹⁵And he brought the people's offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. (Leviticus 9:15).

Whatever touched the flesh of, was rendered holy. Lev. 6:27²⁷Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place. (Leviticus 6:27).

Garments sprinkled with the blood of, to be washed. Lev. 6:27²⁷Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place. (Leviticus 6:27).

Laws respecting the vessels used for boiling the flesh of. Lev. 6:28²⁸But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken: and if it be sodden in a brazen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water. (Leviticus 6:28).

Was typical of Christ's sacrifice. 2 Cor. 5:21²¹For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (2 Corinthians 5:21). Heb. 13:11-13¹¹For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. ¹²Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. ¹³Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. (Hebrews 13:11‑13).
