Silver.

Veins of, found in the earth. Job 28:1¹Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it. (Job 28:1).

Generally found in an impure state. Prov. 25:4⁴Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer. (Proverbs 25:4).

Comparative value of. Isa. 60:17¹⁷For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness. (Isaiah 60:17).

DESCRIBED AS

White and shining. Psa. 68:13, 14¹³Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold. ¹⁴When the Almighty scattered kings in it, it was white as snow in Salmon. (Psalm 68:13‑14).

Fusible. Ezek. 22:20, 22²⁰As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you. (Ezekiel 22:20)
²²As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the Lord have poured out my fury upon you. (Ezekiel 22:22).

Malleable. Jer. 10:9⁹Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men. (Jeremiah 10:9).

Purified by fire. Prov. 17:3³The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts. (Proverbs 17:3). Zec. 13:9⁹And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God. (Zechariah 13:9).

PURIFIED, CALLED

Refined silver. 1 Chron. 29:4⁴Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal: (1 Chronicles 29:4).

Choice silver. Prov. 8:19¹⁹My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. (Proverbs 8:19).

Tarshish carried on extensive commerce in. Jer. 10:9⁹Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men. (Jeremiah 10:9). Ezek. 27:12¹²Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. (Ezekiel 27:12).

The patriarchs rich in. Gen. 13:2²And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. (Genesis 13:2). Gen. 24:35³⁵And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. (Genesis 24:35).

Used as money from the earliest age. Gen. 23:15, 16¹⁵My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead. ¹⁶And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. (Genesis 23:15‑16). Gen. 37:28²⁸Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. (Genesis 37:28). 1 Kin. 16:24.

Very abundant in the reign of Solomon. 1 Kin. 10:21, 22, 27. 2 Chr. 9:20, 21, 27²⁰And all the drinking vessels of king Solomon were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold: none were of silver; it was not any thing accounted of in the days of Solomon. ²¹For the king's ships went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram: every three years once came the ships of Tarshish bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks. (2 Chronicles 9:20‑21)
²⁷And the king made silver in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore trees that are in the low plains in abundance. (2 Chronicles 9:27).

The working in, a trade. Acts 19:24²⁴For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; (Acts 19:24).

MADE INTO

Cups. Gen. 44:2²And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. (Genesis 44:2).

Dishes. Num. 7:13, 84, 85¹³And his offering was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: (Numbers 7:13)
⁸⁴This was the dedication of the altar, in the day when it was anointed, by the princes of Israel: twelve chargers of silver, twelve silver bowls, twelve spoons of gold: ⁸⁵Each charger of silver weighing an hundred and thirty shekels, each bowl seventy: all the silver vessels weighed two thousand and four hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: (Numbers 7:84‑85).

Bowls. Num. 7:13, 84¹³And his offering was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: (Numbers 7:13)

Chains. Isa. 40:19¹⁹The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. (Isaiah 40:19).

Wires (alluded to). Ecc. 12:6.

Sockets for the boards of the tabernacle. Ex. 26:19, 25, 32¹⁹And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for his two tenons, and two sockets under another board for his two tenons. (Exodus 26:19)
²⁵And they shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board. (Exodus 26:25)
³²And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver. (Exodus 26:32). Ex. 36:24, 26, 30, 36²⁴And forty sockets of silver he made under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for his two tenons, and two sockets under another board for his two tenons. (Exodus 36:24)

³⁰And there were eight boards; and their sockets were sixteen sockets of silver, under every board two sockets. (Exodus 36:30)
³⁶And he made thereunto four pillars of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold: their hooks were of gold; and he cast for them four sockets of silver. (Exodus 36:36).

Ornaments and hooks for the pillars of the tabernacle. Ex. 27:17¹⁷All the pillars round about the court shall be filleted with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their sockets of brass. (Exodus 27:17). Ex. 38:19¹⁹And their pillars were four, and their sockets of brass four; their hooks of silver, and the overlaying of their chapiters and their fillets of silver. (Exodus 38:19).

Candlesticks. 1 Chron. 28:15¹⁵Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every candlestick, and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, both for the candlestick, and also for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick. (1 Chronicles 28:15).

Tables. 1 Chron. 28:16¹⁶And by weight he gave gold for the tables of showbread, for every table; and likewise silver for the tables of silver: (1 Chronicles 28:16).

Beds or couches. Esther 1:6⁶Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble. (Esther 1:6).

Vessels. 2 Sam. 8:10¹⁰Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass: (2 Samuel 8:10). Ezra 6:5⁵And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God. (Ezra 6:5).

Idols. Psa. 115:4⁴Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. (Psalm 115:4). Isa. 2:20²⁰In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats; (Isaiah 2:20). Isa. 30:22²²Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. (Isaiah 30:22).

Ornaments for the person. Ex. 3:22²²But every woman shall borrow of her neighbor, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians. (Exodus 3:22).

Given by the Israelites for making the tabernacle. Ex. 25:3³And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass, (Exodus 25:3). Ex. 35:24²⁴Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the Lord's offering: and every man, with whom was found shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it. (Exodus 35:24).

Given by David and his subjects for making the temple. 1 Chron. 28:14¹⁴He gave of gold by weight for things of gold, for all instruments of all manner of service; silver also for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every kind of service: (1 Chronicles 28:14). 1 Chron. 29:2, 6-9²Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colors, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. (1 Chronicles 29:2)
⁶Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly, ⁷And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. ⁸And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy. (1 Chronicles 29:6‑9).

Taken in war often consecrated to God. Josh. 6:19¹⁹But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord. (Joshua 6:19). 2 Sam. 8:11¹¹Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued; (2 Samuel 8:11). 1 Kin. 15:15.

Taken in war purified by fire. Num. 31:22, 23²²Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead, ²³Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water. (Numbers 31:22‑23).

Often given as presents. 1 Kin. 10:25. 2 Kin. 5:5, 23.

Tribute often paid in. 2 Chr. 17:11¹¹Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats. (2 Chronicles 17:11). Neh. 5:15¹⁵But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God. (Nehemiah 5:15).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of the words of the Lord. Psa. 12:6⁶The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. (Psalm 12:6).

Of the tongue of the just. Prov. 10:20²⁰The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. (Proverbs 10:20).

Of good rulers. Isa. 1:22, 23²²Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water: ²³Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. (Isaiah 1:22‑23).

Of the Medo-Persian kingdom. Dan. 2:32, 39³²This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, (Daniel 2:32)
³⁹And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. (Daniel 2:39).

Of saints purified by affliction. Psa. 66:10¹⁰For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. (Psalm 66:10). Zech. 13:9⁹And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God. (Zechariah 13:9).

(Labor of seeking for,) of diligence required for attaining knowledge. Prov. 2:4⁴If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; (Proverbs 2:4).

(Reprobate,) of the wicked. Jer. 6:30³⁰Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the Lord hath rejected them. (Jeremiah 6:30).

(Dross of,) of the wicked. Isa. 1:22²²Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water: (Isaiah 1:22). Ezek. 22:18¹⁸Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver. (Ezekiel 22:18).

Wisdom to be esteemed more than. Job 28:15¹⁵It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. (Job 28:15). Prov. 3:14¹⁴For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. (Proverbs 3:14). Prov. 8:10, 19¹⁰Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. (Proverbs 8:10)
¹⁹My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. (Proverbs 8:19). Prov. 16:16¹⁶How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! (Proverbs 16:16).
