Ancient sieves, or sifters, were crudely made of rushes, though the Gauls are credited with their manufacture from horsehair
They were used for separating the flour from the bran, or broken kernels, and what was left in the sieve was thrown back into the mill to be reground (Isa. 30:2828And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err. (Isaiah 30:28)).
