“All the worst features of the human heart are linked with the name of Christianity.” Being a believer or professing to be a believer does not exempt one from the subtle danger of the awful plague of “self.” In the name of Christianity, “men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, evil speakers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, profane, without natural affection  ...  having no love for what is good  ...  lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; having a form of piety but denying the power of it” (2 Tim. 3 JND). Self orientation and occupation supports the love of self, supports the love of money, promotes boasting, promotes an arrogant spirit, promotes speaking evil of others, promotes insubordination to authority, and supports an ungrateful spirit that others owe me more than I receive from them. May we covet a right spirit, that which the Apostle Paul had — “I am crucified with Christ, and no longer live, I [self], but Christ lives in me; but in that I now live in flesh, I live by faith, the faith of the Son of God [that faith which has Christ, rather than self, as its object], who has loved me and given Himself for me” (Gal. 2:2020I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20) JND).
