Concise Bible Dictionary:

This is literally “child conductor,” pedagogue: originally a slave who took his master’s children to school. The law was a schoolmaster to the Jews (not to the Gentiles: Paul said we, in contrast to ye in Gal. 3:2626For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26)) until Christ came; but any led to Christ were no longer under that schoolmaster (Gal. 3:24-2524Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. (Galatians 3:24‑25); compare Rom. 6:1414For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. (Romans 6:14)).
