In preparing this edition for the press, the publishers have taken the opportunity of revising it for two main reasons. Firstly, in the interests of more careful expression at a number of points, and secondly to make its language rather simpler and more suitable for a time over a hundred years after it was first published. The above preface is an abridgment of the somewhat lengthy introductory material which the author supplied for the early editions of the book.
