 27And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book;
 28and Jehovah rooted them out of their land in anger, and in fury, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it appears this day.
 29The hidden things belong to Jehovah our God; but the revealed ones are ours and our children's for ever, to do all the words of this law. (Deut. 29:20‑29)

• And first as to ways: “as His fear, so is His wrath.” It is not arbitrary, but according to His own nature and character. Fear is knowing Him in truth, so that what He is, is applied to the holy judgment of all that is in the soul, so that nothing should displease Him or hinder communion. Now wrath as discipline—governmental displeasure—is the expression of this as regards the state of the soul, where it has been unheeded, or the will has been in it.
