Mr. King was a nice Christian man, a good provider, a loving husband, and a faithful father. But Mr. King was not fond of reading. Nevertheless, when he had courted the lady who became Mrs. King, he had read and re-read her letters; and he had written very nice ones in return. His marriage was happy, and he was blessed with two children.

One winter, Mrs. King took the children to visit her parents (the children’s grandparents). The return trip had been arranged to be by train; and, as it turned out, the arrangement had to be modified. So, because phone calls were expensive in those days, Mrs. King sent new instructions in a letter to Mr. King.

Mr. King received the letter; but not suspecting its contents, he laid it aside until he might feel more like reading it. In the meanwhile, Mrs. King and the children boarded the train and headed homeward. According to the instructions which had been mailed, they anticipated meeting Mr. King at a different train station and time than he had anticipated. When they alighted, in the middle of a cold snowy night at the little train station in a small town, they found nobody there to meet them. So they waited—for hours. The train station was very crude and cold, and the only warm place near it was a tavern. So, very unwillingly, Mrs. King took the children there to stay warm, while she periodically made short trips back to the train station to look for her husband. She also tried to phone him, but apparently he did not hear the phone.

Finally, after several hours, Mr. King did hear the phone and he answered it. He was surprised to hear Mrs. King calling from a town more than an hour’s drive away. He promptly got in his car and went after his family. Mother and children were so tired—and so glad to climb into the warm car and head home. In retrospect, the children thought it had been an adventure. Mrs. King had other thoughts. And I don’t think Mr. King ever got over his regret for neglecting his loving wife’s letter.

Is God less loving? Have you neglected His Word recently? Today? What may you have missed? Communication and trust are fundamental to all good relationships. Stale communication signifies a stagnant relationship. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Romans 10:17. Is your faith fresh, or forgotten?
