 here we find that there would be the spread of doctrine within — "leaven," used here, as well as elsewhere, for doctrine. For instance, we have "the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees," which our Lord called ,leaven." The thought here is to symbolize that which spreads and permeates what is exposed to it.  I believe that the leaven here sets forth the propagandism of dogmas and decrees, after that Christendom became a great power in the earth (answering to the tree — which was the case, historically, in the time of Constantine the Great).
