4Mas vosotros, hermanos, no estáis en tinieblas, para que aquel día os sobrecoja como ladrón;

 They were aware from the prophecies that there was a time of dismal sorrow for Israel, and they did not know how to put this together with their predicted blessing. (Remarks on Matthew 24:1-31 by W. Kelly)
 They knew there could never be such desolation if their Messiah was reigning over them. They wished to know when the time of sorrow should come, and what should be the sign of His own presence that should close it and bring in unending joy. (Remarks on Matthew 24:1-31 by W. Kelly)

Observe, here, that the end of "the age" is the only proper meaning. It has no reference to the last catastrophe of the world as a material system, but to a certain dispensation running out its course in the world, from which the term "world" is totally distinct.
