An Aramaic word signifying “riches.” It is personified as a “master” in Matthew 6:24²⁴No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Matthew 6:24) and Luke 16:13: “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” In Luke 16:9, 11⁹And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. (Luke 16:9)
¹¹If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? (Luke 16:11) it is called “unrighteous mammon” (as appertaining to this world in which the rights of God to all have been refused) in opposition to true riches, which appertain to the world to come.
