Design of. 2 Peter 1:19¹⁹We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: (2 Peter 1:19).

DESCRIBED AS

Burning. Gen. 15:17¹⁷And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. (Genesis 15:17).

Shining. John 5:35³⁵He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. (John 5:35).

Lighted with oil. Matt. 25:3, 8³They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: (Matthew 25:3)
⁸And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. (Matthew 25:8).

Oil for, carried in vessels. Matt. 25:4⁴But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. (Matthew 25:4).

Sometimes supplied with oil from a bowl through pipes. Zech. 4:2²And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: (Zechariah 4:2).

Required to be constantly trimmed. Matt. 25:7⁷Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. (Matthew 25:7).

USED FOR LIGHTING

The tabernacle. Ex. 25:37³⁷And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. (Exodus 25:37).

Private apartments. Acts 20:8⁸And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. (Acts 20:8).

Chariots of war by night. Nah. 2:3,4³The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken. ⁴The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings. (Nahum 2:3‑4).

Marriage processions. Matt. 25:1¹Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. (Matthew 25:1).

Persons going out at night. John 18:3³Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. (John 18:3).

Often kept lighting all night. Prov. 31:18¹⁸She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. (Proverbs 31:18).

Placed on a stand to give light to all in the house. Matt. 5:15¹⁵Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. (Matthew 5:15).

Illumination of the tents of Arab chiefs by, alluded to. Job 29:3, 4³When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness; ⁴As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle; (Job 29:3‑4).

Probable origin of dark lantern. Judg. 7:16¹⁶And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. (Judges 7:16).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Of the word of God. Psa. 119:105¹⁰⁵NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105). Prov. 6:23²³For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: (Proverbs 6:23).

Of omniscience of Christ. Dan. 10:6⁶His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in color to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. (Daniel 10:6). Rev. 1:14¹⁴His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; (Revelation 1:14).

Of graces of the Holy Ghost. Rev. 4:5⁵And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. (Revelation 4:5).

Of salvation of God. Gen. 15:17¹⁷And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. (Genesis 15:17). Isa. 62:1¹For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. (Isaiah 62:1).

Of God's guidance. 2 Sam. 22:29²⁹For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness. (2 Samuel 22:29). Psa. 18:28²⁸For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (Psalm 18:28).

Of glory of the cherubim. Ezek. 1:13¹³As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. (Ezekiel 1:13).

Of spirit of man. Prov. 20:27²⁷The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly. (Proverbs 20:27).

Of ministers. John 5:35³⁵He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. (John 5:35).

Of wise rulers. 2 Sam. 21:17¹⁷But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succored him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. (2 Samuel 21:17). (marg.)

Of severe judgments. Rev. 8:10¹⁰And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; (Revelation 8:10).

Of a succession of heirs. 1 Kin. 11:36. 1 Kin. 15:4.

(Put out,) of destruction of the wicked. Job 18:5, 6⁵Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him. (Job 18:5‑6). (marg.) Job 21:17¹⁷How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger. (Job 21:17). (marg.) Prov. 13:9⁹The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. (Proverbs 13:9).

(Totally quenched,) of complete destruction of those who curse parents. Prov. 20:20²⁰Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. (Proverbs 20:20).
