The message that the young king Josiah heard, as the Word of God was read to him, made him very sad and concerned. In fact, he was so concerned that he tore his beautiful clothing. (People in Josiah’s day tore their clothing to show that they were very humbled and sad about something.)
Josiah had learned that the Lord was very angry at His people for their disobedience and rebellion, and he wanted to know what was to be done. He sent the high priest and some others to inquire of the Lord about the words that had been read.
The message came back to Josiah that indeed God was going to punish His people for their disobedience and their worship of idols. But this terrible judgment would not fall during the time that Josiah lived since his heart was tender towards the Word of God and he was truly repentant for what had happened.
