Isa. 14:4‑23• 4that thou shalt take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased, the golden city ceased!
5Jehovah hath broken the staff of the wicked, the sceptre of the rulers.
6He that smote the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, that ruled the nations in anger, hath a persecution without restraint.
7The whole earth is at rest—is quiet: they break forth into singing.
8Yea, the cypresses rejoice at thee, the cedars of Lebanon, [saying,] Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
9Sheol from beneath is moved for thee to meet [thee] at thy coming; it stirreth up the giants for thee, all the chief ones of the earth, raising up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
10All of them shall answer and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
11Thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, the noise of thy lyres: the worm is spread under thee, and vermin covereth thee.
12How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations!
13And thou saidst in thine heart, I will ascend into the heavens, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of assembly, in the recesses of the north;
14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.
15Yet thou shalt be brought down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.
16They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, they shall consider thee, [saying,] [Is] this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
17[that] made the world as a wilderness, and overthrew the cities thereof; [that] let not loose his prisoners to their home?
18All kings of the nations, all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.
19But thou art cast out from thy sepulchre like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain—those thrust through with the sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcass trodden under foot.
20Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people: the seed of evil-doers shall not be named forever.
21Prepare ye slaughter for his children because of the iniquity of their fathers; that they rise not up and possess the earth, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
22And I will rise up against them, saith Jehovah of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son's son, saith Jehovah.
23I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water; and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith Jehovah of hosts. (Isa. 14:4‑23)
Isa. 21:1‑10• 1The burden of the desert of the sea.
2A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, Elam; besiege, Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.
3Therefore are my loins filled with pain; pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail; I am bowed down so as not to hear; I am dismayed so as not to see.
4My heart panteth, horror affrighted me; the night of my pleasure hath he turned into trembling unto me.
5Prepare the table, appoint the watch; eat, drink; arise, ye princes, anoint the shield.
6For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman; let him declare what he seeth.
7And he saw chariots, horsemen by pairs, a chariot with asses, a chariot with camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed.
8And he cried [as] a lion, Lord, I stand continually upon the watch-tower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward every night;
9and, behold, chariots of men come, horsemen by pairs. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
10O my threshing, and the corn of my floor what I have heard of Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you. (Isa. 21:1‑10)
Isa. 47:1‑15• 1Come down, and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground: [there is] no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
2Take the millstones, and grind meal; remove thy veil, strip the train, uncover the leg, pass over rivers.
3Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will meet no man.
4[As for] our Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts [is] his name, the Holy One of Israel.
5Sit silent, and get thee into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no more be called Mistress of kingdoms.
6I was wroth with my people, I profaned mine inheritance, and gave them into thy hand: thou didst show them no mercy; upon the aged hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.
7And thou saidst, I shall be a mistress forever; [so] that thou didst not lay these [things] to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end thereof.
8Now therefore hear this, [thou that art] given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thy heart, I [am], and all besides me [is] nothing; I shall not sit [as] a widow, neither shall I know loss of children.
9But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, loss of children, and widowhood: in full measure shall they come upon thee, in spite of the multitude of thy sorceries, of the great abundance of thine enchantments.
10For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness; thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thy heart, I [am], and all besides me [is] nothing.
11And there cometh upon thee evil; thou shalt not know the dawning thereof: and mischief falleth upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it away; and desolation thou knowest not shall come upon thee suddenly.
12Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest terrify.
13Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels: let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [the things] that shall come upon thee.
14Behold, they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [it shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, a fire to sit before.
15Thus shall they be unto thee wherein thou hast laboured; they that have trafficked with thee from thy youth shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee. (Isa. 47:1‑15)
Jer. 25:12‑26• 12And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith Jehovah, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
13And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.
14For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.
15For thus saith Jehovah God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
16And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
17Then took I the cup at Jehovah's hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom Jehovah had sent me.
18To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing and a curse as it is this day;
19Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;
20and all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Uzzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,
21Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon,
22and all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea,
23Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners,
24and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert,
25and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes,
26and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. (Jer. 25:12‑26)
Jer. 50:1‑51:23• 1The word that Jehovah spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.
2Declare ye among the nations, and publish and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
3For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
4In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go and seek Jehovah their God.
5They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come and let us join ourselves to Jehovah in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.
6My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.
7All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against Jehovah, the habitation of justice, even Jehovah, the hope of their fathers.
8Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.
9For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.
10And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith Jehovah.
11Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls:
12your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land and a desert.
13Because of the wrath of Jehovah it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
14Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against Jehovah.
15Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of Jehovah: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
16Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.
17Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.
18Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.
19And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied on mount Ephraim and Gilead.
20In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.
21Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith Jehovah, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
22A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.
23How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
24I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against Jehovah.
25Jehovah hath opened his armory, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of Jehovah God of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans.
26Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.
27Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.
28The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his temple.
29Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against Jehovah, against the Holy One of Israel.
30Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith Jehovah.
31Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith Jehovah God of Hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.
32And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.
33Thus saith Jehovah of hosts; the children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast: they refused to let them go.
34Their Redeemer is strong; Jehovah of hosts is his name: he shall thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
35A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith Jehovah, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
36A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.
37A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.
38A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.
39Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited forever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
40As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith Jehovah; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
41Behold a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
42They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not show mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
43The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
44Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me
45Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.
46At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
1Thus saith Jehovah; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;
2and will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
3Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.
4Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets.
5For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of Jehovah of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
6Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of Jehovah's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.
7Babylon hath been a golden cup in Jehovah's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
8Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
9We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.
10Jehovah hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of Jehovah our God.
11Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: Jehovah hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of Jehovah, the vengeance of his temple.
12Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for Jehovah hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.
13O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.
14Jehovah of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillars; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.
15He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.
16When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
17Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
18They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
19The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name.
20Thou wast my battle axe, weapons of war: with thee I have broken nations in pieces; and with thee I have destroyed kingdoms.
21And with thee I have broken in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee I have broken in pieces the chariot and its rider;
22and with thee I have broken in pieces the husband and the wife; and with thee I have broken in pieces the aged and the young; and with thee I have broken in pieces the youth and the maid.
23And with thee I have broken in pieces the shepherd and his flock; and with thee I have broken in pieces the plowman and his team; and with thee I have broken in pieces the governors and prefects. (Jer. 50:1‑51:23)
Dan. 5:28‑6• 28PERES; thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
1It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be in all the kingdom;
2and over these, three presidents—of whom Daniel was one—to whom these satraps should render account, and that the king should suffer no loss.
3Now this Daniel surpassed the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to appoint him over the whole realm.
4Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find a pretext against Daniel with respect to the kingdom; but they could not find any pretext or fault; inasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
5Then said these men, We shall not find any pretext against this Daniel, unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
6Then these presidents and satraps came in a body to the king, and said thus unto him: King Darius, live forever!
7All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects, and the satraps, the counsellors, and the governors have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
8Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.
9Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and, his windows being open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11But those men came in a body, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.
12Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king's decree: Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask anything of any god or man within thirty days, except of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.
13Then they answered and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the captivity of the children of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
14Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore distressed thereby, and set his heart on Daniel to save him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
15Then these men came in a body unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
16Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. The king spoke and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will save thee.
17And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his nobles, that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
18Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were concubines brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.
19Then the king arose with the light at break of day, and went in haste unto the den of lions.
20And when he came near unto the den, he cried with a mournful voice unto Daniel: the king spoke and said unto Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, hath thy God whom thou servest continually been able to save thee from the lions?
21Then Daniel spoke unto the king, O king, live forever!
22My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocence was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
23Thereupon was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
24And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces ere they came to the bottom of the den.
25Then king Darius wrote unto all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.
26I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and steadfast forever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
27He saveth and delivereth, and he worketh signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth: who hath saved Daniel from the power of the lions.
28And this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian. (Dan. 5:28‑6)
Rev. 17:1‑18:24• 1And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven bowls, and spoke with me, saying, Come hither; I will show thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth on [the] many waters;
2with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and those that inhabit the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet beast full of [the] names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4And the woman was clothed with purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the unclean things of her fornication,
5and upon her forehead a name written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus; and when I saw her, I wondered with great wonder.
7And the angel said to me, Wherefore didst thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that beareth her, that hath the seven heads and the ten horns.
8The beast which thou sawest was and is not, and is to rise up out of the abyss and go into perdition: and they shall wonder that dwell on the earth, of whom the name is not written in the book of life from the world's foundation, when they behold the beast that he was and is not and shall be present.
9Here is the mind that hath wisdom.
10The seven heads are seven mountains, where the woman sitteth on them; and they are seven kings: five are fallen, one is, the other is not yet come; and when he shall have come, he must continue a short space.
11And the beast which was and is not, even he is an eighth and is of the seven and goeth into perdition.
12And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings which have not yet received a kingdom; but they receive authority as kings one hour with the beast.
13These have one mind and give their power and authority to the beast.
14These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them (for he is Lord of lords and King of kings), and those that are with him, called and chosen and faithful.
15And he saith to me, The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.
16And the ten horns which thou sawest, and the beast, these shall hate the harlot and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh and shall burn her with fire.
17For God hath put into their hearts to accomplish his mind, and to accomplish one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God shall be finished.
18And the woman whom thou sawest is the great city that hath kingship over the kings of the earth.
1After these things I saw another angel coming down out of the heaven, having great authority; and the earth was illumined with his glory.
2And he cried with a strong voice, saying, Fallen [fallen] is Babylon the great, and is become a habitation of demons, and a haunt of every unclean spirit, and a haunt of every unclean and hated bird.
3For of the wine of the fury of her fornication all the nations drank, and the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth became rich by the power of her luxury.
4And I heard another voice out of the heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye have no fellowship with her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues:
5for her sins have reached unto the heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
6Render to her as she also rendered, and double [the] double according to her works: in the cup which she mixed mix to her double.
7How much she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, so much torment and mourning give her. Because in her heart she saith, I sit a queen and am no widow and shall in no wise see mourning;
8therefore in one day shall her plagues come, death and mourning and famine; and she shall be utterly burnt with fire: for strong is the Lord God that judged her.
9And the kings of the earth that committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her shall weep and wail on account of her, when they see the smoke of her burning,
10standing afar off because of the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour came thy judgment.
11And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn on account of her; for their lading no one buyeth anymore—a
12lading of gold and of silver and of precious stone and of pearl and of fine linen and of purple and of silk and of scarlet; and all thyine wood and all furniture of ivory and all furniture of most precious wood, and of brass and of iron and of marble;
13and cinnamon and amomum and incense and unguent and frankincense and wine and oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and of horses and of chariots and of bodies and souls of men.
14And the fruits of the desire of thy soul have departed from thee, and all the sumptuous and the bright things have perished from thee, and never shall they find them anymore.
15The merchants of these things that became rich by her shall stand afar off because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning,
16saying, Woe, woe, the great city, that was clothed with fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls!
17for in one hour were so great riches made desolate. And every pilot and every voyager and sailors and as many as trade by the sea stood afar off,
18and cried, seeing the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like the great city!
19And they cast dust upon their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, wherein all that had ships in the sea became rich by reason of her costliness! for in one hour was she made desolate.
20Rejoice over her, O heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets: for God hath judged your judgment on her.
21And a strong angel took up a stone as a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall Babylon the great city be cast down, and shall in no wise be found more.
22And no voice of harpers and musicians and pipers and trumpeters shall be heard any more in thee; and no craftsman of any craft shall be found any more in thee; and no sound of millstone shall be heard any more in thee;
23and no light of lamp shall shine any more in thee; and no voice of bridegroom and of bride shall be heard any more in thee; for thy merchants were the great ones of the earth; for by thy sorcery were all the nations deceived.
24And in her the blood of prophets and of saints was found, and of all that were slain on the earth. (Rev. 17:1‑18:24)
