Hope.

In God. Psa. 39:7⁷And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. (Psalm 39:7). 1 Peter 1:21²¹Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. (1 Peter 1:21).

In Christ. 1 Cor. 15:19¹⁹If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. (1 Corinthians 15:19). 1 Tim. 1:1¹Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; (1 Timothy 1:1).

In God's promises. Acts 26:6, 7⁶And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: ⁷Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. (Acts 26:6‑7). Tit. 1:2²In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (Titus 1:2).

In the mercy of God. Psa. 33:18¹⁸Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; (Psalm 33:18).

Is the work of the Holy Ghost. Rom. 15:13¹³Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. (Romans 15:13). Gal. 5:5⁵For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. (Galatians 5:5).

OBTAINED THROUGH

Grace. 2 Thess. 2:16¹⁶Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, (2 Thessalonians 2:16).

The word Psa. 119:81⁸¹CAPH. My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word. (Psalm 119:81).

Patience and comfort of the Scriptures. Rom. 15:4⁴For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (Romans 15:4).

The gospel. Col. 1:5, 23⁵For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; (Colossians 1:5)
²³If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; (Colossians 1:23).

Faith. Rom. 5:1, 2¹Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: ²By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1‑2). Gal. 5:5⁵For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. (Galatians 5:5).

The result of experience. Rom. 5:4⁴And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (Romans 5:4).

A better hope brought in by Christ. Heb. 7:19¹⁹For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. (Hebrews 7:19).

DESCRIBED AS

Good. 2 Thess. 2:16¹⁶Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, (2 Thessalonians 2:16).

Lively. 1 Peter 1:3³Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Peter 1:3).

Sure and steadfast. Heb. 6:19¹⁹Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; (Hebrews 6:19).

Gladdening. Prov. 10:28²⁸The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. (Proverbs 10:28).

Blessed. Titus 2:13¹³Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:13).

Makes not ashamed. Rom. 5:5⁵And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (Romans 5:5).

Triumphs over difficulties. Rom. 4:18¹⁸Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. (Romans 4:18).

Is an encouragement to boldness in preaching. 2 Cor. 3:12¹²Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: (2 Corinthians 3:12).

SAINTS

Are called to. Eph. 4:4⁴There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; (Ephesians 4:4).

Rejoice in. Rom. 5:2²By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:2). Rom. 12:12¹²Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; (Romans 12:12).

Have all, the same. Eph. 4:4⁴There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; (Ephesians 4:4).

Have, in death. Prov. 14:32³²The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death. (Proverbs 14:32).

Should abound in. Rom. 15:13¹³Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. (Romans 15:13).

Should look for the object of. Tit. 2:13¹³Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:13).

Should not be ashamed of. Psa. 119:116¹¹⁶Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. (Psalm 119:116).

Should hold fast. Heb. 3:6⁶But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. (Hebrews 3:6).

Should not be moved from. Col. 1:23²³If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; (Colossians 1:23).

Should continue in. Psa. 71:14¹⁴But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more. (Psalm 71:14). 1 Peter 1:13¹³Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; (1 Peter 1:13).

Connected with faith and love. 1 Cor. 13:13¹³And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (1 Corinthians 13:13).

OBJECTS OF;

Salvation. 1 Thess. 5:8⁸But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. (1 Thessalonians 5:8).

Righteousness. Gal. 5:5⁵For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. (Galatians 5:5).

Christ's glorious appearing. Titus 2:13¹³Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:13).

A resurrection. Acts 23:6⁶But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. (Acts 23:6). Acts 24:15¹⁵And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. (Acts 24:15).

Eternal life. Titus 1:2²In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (Titus 1:2). Titus 3:7⁷That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:7).

Glory. Rom. 5:2²By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:2). Col. 1:27²⁷To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: (Colossians 1:27).

Leads to purity. 1 John. 3:3.

Leads to patience. Rom. 8:25²⁵But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. (Romans 8:25). 1 The. 1:3.

Seek for full assurance of. Heb. 6:11¹¹And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: (Hebrews 6:11).

Be ready to give an answer concerning. 1 Peter 3:15¹⁵But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: (1 Peter 3:15).

Encouragement to. Hos. 2:15¹⁵And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. (Hosea 2:15). Zech. 9:12¹²Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee; (Zechariah 9:12).

Encourage others to. Psa. 130:7⁷Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. (Psalm 130:7).

Happiness of. Psa. 146:5⁵Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God: (Psalm 146:5).

Life is the season of. Ecc. 9:4. Isa. 38:18¹⁸For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. (Isaiah 38:18).

The wicked have no ground for. Eph. 2:12¹²That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: (Ephesians 2:12).

OF THE WICKED

Is in their worldly possessions. Job 31:24²⁴If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; (Job 31:24).

Shall make them ashamed. Isa. 20:5, 6⁵And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory. ⁶And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation, whither we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape? (Isaiah 20:5‑6). Zech. 9:5⁵Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited. (Zechariah 9:5).

Shall perish. Job 8:13¹³So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: (Job 8:13). Job 11:20²⁰But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost. (Job 11:20). Prov. 10:28²⁸The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. (Proverbs 10:28).

Shall be extinguished in death. Job 27:8⁸For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? (Job 27:8).
