Heb. 10:1‑4,11• 1For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

It is well to remember that the “perfect” or “purged” conscience, of which the apostle speaks in chapters 9 and 10, is very different to that which is spoken of elsewhere as “a good conscience.” The purged conscience is one that, being “once purged,” has no more conscience of sins (chapter 10:2). It supposes a conscience that has been exercised as to its sins, but has had that exercise met by learning that the believer is cleansed from all sins by the precious blood of Christ and will never come under judgment. A good conscience is a conscience void of offense in the practical ways and walk. (The Signification of the Tabernacle and Its Sacrifices: Hebrews 9:8-10 by H. Smith)

JND Translation Notes

g
"which is such as is."
h
The present time (ver. 9) is opposed to the time of setting things right (ver. 10). The tabernacle is in view in Hebrews, not the temple; but the fact that offerings were then still made is recognized in what follows. He could not call it "the present age" (a Jewish term for the age preceding the Messiah), because Messiah was come and he had been crucified; but the carnal ordinances were still offered, so that for the Hebrews it was not "the age to come." The "image" could be only for a present time on earth. The patterns were in the heavens.
i
Latreuo. "Worship" is perhaps too strong, but "service" is equivocal. It is to approach a god with prayers, or in offering up a religious service. see ver. 6.

WK Translation Notes

a
See note to {vi 30112}{/vi}.
b
For "parable" some render "figure," and so in 11:19. This is rather a question of linguistic taste than of substantial exactitude.
c
It is agreed that "now" present is needless, as "then" in KJV is erroneous.
d
T. R. gives "hon," meaning "in which" time; but the critics read hēn "to which," as given in this version.
e
Or, "him that serveth."
