[GERZITES

Concise Bible Dictionary:

Ancient Canaanite city and its inhabitants. It was taken by Joshua, and allotted to Ephraim, and afterward to the Kohathites (1 Chron. 6:6767And they gave unto them, of the cities of refuge, Shechem in mount Ephraim with her suburbs; they gave also Gezer with her suburbs, (1 Chronicles 6:67); 1 Chron. 7:2828And their possessions and habitations were, Beth-el and the towns thereof, and eastward Naaran, and westward Gezer, with the towns thereof; Shechem also and the towns thereof, unto Gaza and the towns thereof: (1 Chronicles 7:28)); but the ancient inhabitants held possession. It was taken and burnt by Pharaoh as a Canaanitish city, and the site given to his daughter whom Solomon had married. Solomon rebuilt the city (Josh. 10:3333Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. (Joshua 10:33); Josh. 12:1212The king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one; (Joshua 12:12); Josh. 16:3,103And goeth down westward to the coast of Japhleti, unto the coast of Beth-horon the nether, and to Gezer: and the goings out thereof are at the sea. (Joshua 16:3)
10And they drave not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites unto this day, and serve under tribute. (Joshua 16:10)
; Josh. 21:2121For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Gezer with her suburbs, (Joshua 21:21); Judg. 1:2929Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. (Judges 1:29); 1 Sam. 27:88And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt. (1 Samuel 27:8); 1 Kings 9:15-1715And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the Lord, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer. 16For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife. 17And Solomon built Gezer, and Beth-horon the nether, (1 Kings 9:15‑17)). It is called GAZER (2 Sam. 5:2525And David did so, as the Lord had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer. (2 Samuel 5:25); 1 Chron. 14:1616David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer. (1 Chronicles 14:16)). Compare 1 Chronicles 20:44And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued. (1 Chronicles 20:4) with 2 Samuel 21:18-1918And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. 19And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. (2 Samuel 21:18‑19), GAZER in the former passage refers to GOB in the latter. Gezer is identified with ruins at Tell Jezar, 31° 52' N, 34° 55' E.
