This conclusion, as to the then state of Jacob, seems to be confirmed by Genesis 34 which follows. The settling down in the city before long became a sorrowful story for Jacob, who proved it in one that was near and dear to him. It was the occasion of his daughter Dinah’s shame, as well as of her brother’s cruel and deceitful vengeance, that brought trouble on Jacob, and caused him to stink among the inhabitants of the land, as Jacob so sorely confessed (Gen. 34).
