Ex. 32:7‑35• 7Then Jehovah said to Moses, Away, go down! for thy people, which thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, is acting corruptly.
8They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them: they have made themselves a molten calf, and have bowed down to it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, This is thy god, Israel, who has brought thee up out of the land of Egypt!
9And Jehovah said to Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
10Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of thee a great nation.
11And Moses besought Jehovah his God and said, Jehovah, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
12Wherefore should the Egyptians speak and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel , thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it forever.
14And Jehovah repented of the evil that he had said he would do to his people.
15And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand—tables written on both their sides: on this side and on that were they written.
16And the tables were God's work, and the writing was God's writing, engraven on the tables.
17And Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, and said to Moses, There is a shout of war in the camp.
18And he said, It is not the sound of a shout of victory, neither is it the sound of a shout of defeat: it is the noise of alternate singing I hear.
19And it came to pass, when he came near the camp, and saw the calf and the dancing, that Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
20And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21And Moses said to Aaron, What has this people done to thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin on them?
22And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord burn! thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
23And they said to me, Make us a god, who will go before us; for this Moses, the man that has brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what is become of him!
24And I said to them, Who has gold? They broke it off, and gave it me, and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25And Moses saw the people how they were stripped; for Aaron had stripped them to their shame before their adversaries.
26And Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, He that is for Jehovah, let him come to me. And all the sons of Levi gathered to him.
27And he said to them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Put every man his sword upon his hip; go and return from gate to gate through the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbour.
28And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
29And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves today to Jehovah, yea, every man with his son, and with his brother, and bring on yourselves a blessing today.
30And it came to pass the next day, that Moses said to the people, Ye have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to Jehovah: perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.
31And Moses returned to Jehovah, and said, Alas, this people has sinned a great sin, and they have made themselves a god of gold!
32And now, if thou wilt forgive their sin...but if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book that thou hast written.
33And Jehovah said to Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35And Jehovah plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made. (Ex. 32:7‑35)
Num. 11:1‑35• 1And it came to pass that when the people murmured, it was evil in the ears of Jehovah; and Jehovah heard it, and his anger was kindled, and the fire of Jehovah burned among them, and consumed some in the extremity of the camp.
2And the people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to Jehovah—and the fire abated.
3And they called the name of that place Taberah; because a fire of Jehovah burned among them.
4And the mixed multitude that was among them lusted; and the children of Israel also wept again and said, Who will give us flesh to eat?
5We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic;
6and now our soul is dried up: there is nothing at all but the manna before our eyes.
7And the manna was as coriander seed, and its appearance as the appearance of bdellium.
8The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it with hand-mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was as the taste of oil-cakes.
9And when the dew fell upon the camp by night, the manna fell upon it.
10And Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every one at the entrance of his tent; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled greatly; it was also evil in the eyes of Moses.
11And Moses said to Jehovah, Why hast thou done evil to thy servant, and why have I not found favour in thine eyes, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
12Have I conceived all this people, have I brought them forth, that thou sayest to me, Carry them in thy bosom, as the nursing-father beareth the suckling, unto the land which thou didst swear unto their fathers?
13Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh that we may eat!
14I am not able to bear all this people alone, for it is too heavy for me.
15And if thou deal thus with me, slay me, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, that I may not behold my wretchedness.
16And Jehovah said to Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and their officers; and take them to the tent of meeting, and they shall stand there with thee.
17And I will come down and talk with thee there; and I will take of the Spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, and thou shalt not bear it alone.
18And unto the people shalt thou say, Hallow yourselves for tomorrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the ears of Jehovah, saying, Who will give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt; and Jehovah will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
19Not one day shall ye eat, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;
20but for a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it become loathsome unto you; because that ye have despised Jehovah who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?
21And Moses said, The people in whose midst I am are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou sayest, I will give them flesh that they may eat a whole month.
22Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered for them, to suffice them?
23And Jehovah said to Moses, Hath Jehovah's hand become short? Now shalt thou see whether my word will come to pass unto thee or not.
24And Moses went out and told the people the words of Jehovah; and he gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tent.
25And Jehovah came down in a cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy men, the elders; and it came to pass, that when the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not repeat it.
26And two men remained in the camp, the name of the one, Eldad, and the name of the other, Medad; and the Spirit rested upon them (and they were among them that were written, but they had not gone out to the tent); and they prophesied in the camp.
27And there ran a youth, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.
28And Joshua the son of Nun, the attendant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them!
29But Moses said to him, Enviest thou for my sake? would that all Jehovah's people were prophets, and that Jehovah would put his Spirit upon them!
30And Moses withdrew into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
31And there went forth a wind from Jehovah, and drove quails from the sea, and cast them about the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and about a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the earth.
32And the people rose up all that day, and the whole night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered little gathered ten homers; and they spread them abroad for themselves round about the camp.
33The flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, when the wrath of Jehovah was kindled against the people, and Jehovah smote the people with a very great plague.
34And they called the name of that place Kibroth-hattaavah; because there they buried the people who lusted.
35From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth; and they were at Hazeroth. (Num. 11:1‑35)
Num. 14:1‑45• 1And the whole congregation lifted up their voice again and cried, and the people wept that night.
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses, and against Aaron, and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God that we had died in this wilderness!
3And why is Jehovah bringing us to this land that we may fall by the sword, that our wives and our little ones may become a prey? Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?
4And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return unto Egypt.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, of them that searched out the land, rent their clothes;
7and they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land which we passed through to search it is an exceeding good land.
8If Jehovah delight in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it us — a land, which floweth with milk and honey.
9Only rebel not ye against Jehovah, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and Jehovah is with us. Fear them not.
10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11And Jehovah said to Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?
12I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.
13And Moses said to Jehovah, Then the Egyptians shall hear it (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them);
14and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou, Jehovah, art among this people, that thou, Jehovah, art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16Because Jehovah was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken.
18Jehovah is long-suffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people, according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20And Jehovah said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21but as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah!
22for all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice,
23shall in no wise see the land which I did swear unto their fathers: none of them that despised me shall see it.
24But my servant Caleb, because he hath another spirit in him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he came; and his seed shall possess it.
25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness, on the way to the Red sea.
26And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
27How long shall I bear with this evil assembly, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28Say unto them, As surely as I live, saith Jehovah, if I do not do unto you as ye have spoken in mine ears!
29In this wilderness shall your carcasses fall; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number from twenty years old and upwards, who have murmured against me,
30shall in no wise come into the land, concerning which I have lifted up my hand to make you dwell in it; save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31But your little ones, of whom ye said they should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land that ye have despised.
32And as to you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcasses be wasted in the wilderness.
34After the number of the days in which ye have searched out the land, forty days, each day for a year shall ye bear your iniquities forty years, and ye shall know mine estrangement from you.
35I Jehovah have spoken; I will surely do it unto all this evil assembly which have gathered together against me! in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men whom Moses had sent to search out the land, who returned, and made the whole assembly to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report upon the land,
37even those men who had brought up an evil report upon the land, died by a plague before Jehovah.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, lived still of the men that had gone to search out the land.
39And Moses told all these sayings to all the children of Israel; then the people mourned greatly.
40And they rose up early in the morning, and went up to the hill-top, saying, Here are we, and we will go up to the place of which Jehovah has spoken; for we have sinned.
41And Moses said, Why now do ye transgress the commandment of Jehovah? but it shall not prosper!
42Go not up, for Jehovah is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies;
43for the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; for as ye have turned away from Jehovah, Jehovah will not be with you.
44Yet they presumed to go up to the hill-top; but the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and Moses, did not depart from the midst of the camp.
45And the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt on that hill, came down and smote them, and cut them to pieces, as far as Hormah. (Num. 14:1‑45)
Num. 16:1‑50• 1Now Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, made bold, and with him Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men.
2And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown.
3And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Jehovah is among them. Wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of Jehovah?
4And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face.
5And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even tomorrow Jehovah will show who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto Him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto Him.
6This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;
7and put fire therein, and put incense in them before Jehovah tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.
8And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:
9Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
10—that he has brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee; and seek ye now the priesthood also?
11For which cause thou and all thy band are banded together against Jehovah; and Aaron, who is he that ye murmur against him?
12And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, We will not come up!
13Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that thou must make thyself altogether a ruler over us?
14Moreover, thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up!
15Then Moses was very wroth, and said to Jehovah, Have no regard to their oblation: not one ass have I taken from them, neither have I hurt one of them.
16And Moses said to Korah, Be thou and all thy band before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow.
17And take each his censer, and put incense thereon, and present before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; and thou, and Aaron, each his censer.
18And they took each his censer, and put fire on them, and laid incense thereon, and stood before the entrance to the tent of meeting, as well as Moses and Aaron.
19And Korah gathered the whole assembly against them to the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of Jehovah appeared to all the assembly.
20And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
21Separate yourselves from the midst of this assembly, and I will consume them in a moment.
22And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh! shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with the whole assembly?
23And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
24Speak unto the assembly, saying, Get you up from about the habitation of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
25And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
26And he spoke to the assembly, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye perish in all their sins.
27And they got up from the habitation of Koran, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the entrance of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.
28And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah has sent me to do all these deeds, for they are not out of my own heart:
29if these men die as all men die, and are visited with the visitation of all men, Jehovah has not sent me;
30but if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, and all that they have, and they go down alive into Sheol, then ye shall know that these men have despised Jehovah.
31And it came to pass when he had ended speaking all these words, that the ground clave apart that was under them.
32And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
33They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
34And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
35And there came out a fire from Jehovah, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
36And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
37speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.
38The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Jehovah, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
39And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:
40to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before Jehovah; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as Jehovah said to him by the hand of Moses.
41But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of Jehovah.
42And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Jehovah appeared.
43And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.
44And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
45Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.
46And Moses said unto Aaron, Take the censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Jehovah; the plague is begun.
47And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people; and he put on incense, and made atonement for the people.
48And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stayed.
49Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides them that had died because of the matter of Korah.
50And Aaron returned to Moses to the entrance of the tent of meeting; and the plague was stayed. (Num. 16:1‑50)
Num. 25:1‑18• 1And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.
2And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
3And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.
4And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.
5And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.
6And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.
7And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,
8and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
10And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
11Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!
13And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
14And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.
15And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
16And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
17Harass the Midianites, and smite them,
18for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor. (Num. 25:1‑18)
Psa. 106:15‑48• 15And he gave them their request,{HR}And sent leanness into their soul.
16And they were envious of Moses in the camp,{HR}Of Aaron, saint of Jehovah.
17Earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,{HR}And covered Abiram's company.
18And a fire burned in their company,{HR}A flame consumed wicked ones.
19They made a calf in Horeb{HR}And bowed down to a molten image;
20And changed their glory{HR}For the likeness of an ox eating grass.
21They forgot God their Saviour{HR}That did great things in Egypt,
22Wondrous works in Ham's land,{HR}Terrible things at the Red Sea.
23And he said he would destroy them,{HR}Had not Moses stood in the breach before him,{HR}To turn away his wrath from destroying.
24And they despised the pleasant land,{HR}They believed not his word;
25But they murmured in their tents;{HR}They did not hearken to Jehovah's voice.
26And he lifted up his hand to them,{HR}To make them fall in the wilderness,
27And to make their seed fall among the nations,{HR}And to scatter them in the lands.
28And they joined themselves to Baal-Peor{HR}And ate sacrifices of dead (beings).
29And they provoked him by their actions,{HR}And the plague broke out among them.
30Then stood up Phinehas and executed judgment,{HR}And the plague was stayed.
31And it was reckoned to him for righteousness{HR}To generation and generation for evermore.
32And they angered him at the waters of Meribah,{HR}And it went ill with Moses on their account,
33For they provoked his spirit,{HR}And he spoke unadvisedly with his lips.
34They destroyed not the peoples{HR}As (about which) Jehovah said to them;
35But they mingled with the nations{HR}And learned their doings.
36And they served their idols,{HR}Which became a snare unto them.
37And they sacrificed their sons{HR}And their daughters to the demons;
38And shed innocent blood—{HR}Blood of their sons and their daughters,{HR}Whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan,{HR}And the land was polluted with blood.
39And they were defiled in their doings,{HR}And went a whoring in their actions.
40And Jehovah's anger was kindled at his people,{HR}And he abhorred his inheritance.
41And he gave them into nations' hand,{HR}And over them ruled their haters.
42And their enemies oppressed them,{HR}And they were bowed down under their hand.
43Many times he delivereth them,{HR}And they rebel in their counsel{HR}And were brought low by their iniquity.
44But he regarded them in the distress{HR}When he heard them cry.
45And he remembered for them his covenant,{HR}And repented according to the multitude of his mercies;
46And he gave them compassion{HR}Before all that took them captives.
47Save us, Jehovah our God,{HR}And gather us from among the nations{HR}To give thanks unto thy holy name,{HR}To glory in thy praise.
48Blessed [be] Jehovah God of Israel{HR}From the everlasting and unto the everlasting!{HR}And let all the people say, Amen, Hallelujah . (Psa. 106:15‑48)
