The name given by Jacob to the altar he erected near Shechem. God had just before altered his name into Israel, “a prince of God”; Jacob connected the blessing involved in this name with a piece of land he bought, instead of with God’s house at Bethel, and calls the altar he had erected “God, the God of Israel” (
