The Hebrew year was sacred and civil, with two beginnings

The sacred year began with the month Abib, April, the civil with the month Tisri, October. The months were lunar, twelve in number, with, of course, the necessary intercalary month ve-adar at the proper time, about every three years. As divided by seasons, the year was solar. There were two seasons, summer and winter (Psa. 74:17¹⁷Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter. (Psalm 74:17); Jer. 36:22²²Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him. (Jeremiah 36:22); Amos 3:15¹⁵And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord. To remedy this an additional month was added about every three years.
