Divisions

Dictionary of Biblical Words:

These generally mean “among Christians.” They are spoken of in Rom. 16:17,¹⁷Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. (Romans 16:17) 1 Cor. 3:3³For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? (1 Corinthians 3:3) and enumerated among the works of the flesh in Gal. 5:20²⁰Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, (Galatians 5:20) (seditions). Also spoken of under another word in 1 Cor. 1:10; 11:18, 12:25¹⁰Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (1 Corinthians 1:10) (schism). By their occurrence thus early in the Church’s history we have the divine judgment of them as evil, and contrary to the unity of the body of Christ.
