Concise Bible Dictionary:

Fishing was very common in Egypt, not only with the net, but with the line and hook (Isa. 19:88The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish. (Isaiah 19:8)); and the same were used by the Israelites, for nets are often referred to, and the fish that had the piece of money in its mouth was caught with a hook (Matt. 17:2727Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. (Matthew 17:27)). In Habakkuk 1:1515They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad. (Habakkuk 1:15) the same things are referred to symbolically for the catching of men for captivity. The apostles of the Lord were made fishers of men.
