Allison was really anxious to get back home. She was a college freshman, and her days had been full of studying and hard work. Now it was the Thanksgiving break, and she couldn’t wait to spend the weekend with her family. She jumped into her car and started for home, 150 miles away.
Allison didn’t know it, but she had a hitchhiker. He was very small, and he wore a long, gray coat. Allison didn’t see or hear him. You see, he was a long-haired angora cat, and he was sitting on top of her car’s engine. Allison didn’t know he was there. She just started up the engine and began driving home. She didn’t stop at all, not even for a hamburger, because she just wanted to get back to her family as quickly as she could.
When Allison reached home and got out, she suddenly heard a kitty crying. She felt terrible! Had she run over a cat? She and her family looked everywhere, trying to find where the kitty’s cries were coming from.
The Bible tells of someone who came to “seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:1010For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:10)). The Lord Jesus looked down from heaven and saw that boys and girls were sinners, and He knew they could not save themselves. When a boy or girl has sin on his heart, he cannot get rid of it himself. Sin can make us miserable, but we are not able to pay the price to have our sins removed. The Lord Jesus died on the cross and paid the penalty for sin. Now He is seeking those who are lost in their sins, and He wants to save them and make them His very own.
Allison was seeking for that kitty in distress to save it. Finally, when she could not find where the cries were coming from, she lifted the hood of her car. There sat the little kitty. He must have been miserable during that long, hot ride under the hood. The space was so small that he could not move very easily, and the noisy engine had been roaring in his ears. “He was sitting very still,” Allison said. “It seemed like he didn’t know what to do.”
Allison thinks he probably climbed up into the engine compartment before she left the college. Maybe he tried out that spot because her engine compartment was cozy and warm. Now she lifted him out gently. She could tell he was just a kitten, and, thankfully, the unexpected ride had not harmed him at all. However, because Allison and her family already had a houseful of pets, they dropped him off at the Animal Rescue League. Allison hopes he will find a good home with someone else soon.
The Lord Jesus is able to do much more than just rescue us from the danger of our sins! In Luke 15, the Bible tells us that He is the good Shepherd. When He found a lost sheep, He put it on His shoulders and carried it all the way home. He did not ever let it go again. The Lord Jesus is waiting to save you. He wants to take away your sins and make you a part of His family. He wants to bring you to His beautiful home in heaven. There is a loving welcome there for you, if you will let Him be your Saviour.
This wonderful home will never be too full for another boy or girl to be included. The Bible tells us that “him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:3737All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. (John 6:37)). Will you cry out to the Lord Jesus to save you?
