Listen from:
A poor widow did not have money to pay her rent. When a knock came on her door, fearing it was the landlord coming to collect the rent, she barred the door. It turned out to be a friend who came with money to pay her rent. His mission was not to demand but to give.
This is a picture of the law in contrast to the gospel. The law demands, but God gives. “The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” John 1:1717For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. (John 1:17). Man, the sinner, has nothing to pay, but God is a giving God. “When they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both.” Luke 7:4242And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? (Luke 7:42).
The Lord Jesus came to pay the debt we owed for our many sins, and those who trust Him as their Saviour rejoice to find “the old account was settled long ago” on the cross of Calvary.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Rom. 6:2323For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23).
