“T.” We believe the key to Eccl. 3:1-8,1To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1‑8) and indeed to the entire book, will be found in the expression, “under the sun.” The Spirit of God has furnished us, in this interesting book, with a commentary upon all under the sun a glowing picture of the old creation, and of man in the midst of it. “Under the sun” there is time for everything. God hath set one thing over against another. If there is a birth, there is a death; if there is a smile, there is a tear; the sorrow stands over against the joy. Thus it is “under the sun.” This is the law of the old creation. But look at Paul in Phil. 3 Had he “a time for everything?” No. “One thing I do,” lie says. And why? Because lie had found his life, his sphere, and his object, “above the sun” in that “new creation” of which Christ is the Head and the Center, and wherein “all things are of God.” We have frequently heard Eccl. 3:1-81To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1‑8) abused in the way you allude to; but it has invariably been by those whose hearts are in this present evil world, and who are bold enough to quote Scripture in defense of their worldliness. Alas, for all such!
